How to Manage Zoom Meeting Chat Notification Sounds

Learn how to control Zoom meeting chat notification sounds, reduce interruptions during calls, and check the result without changing unrelated audio settings.

Before you start

The chat notification sound is controlled by the Zoom desktop client on the computer where you join or host the meeting. You do not need to start a meeting to change the setting, but you may need to sign in to the desktop app if your organization restricts settings access. On the mobile app, the exact label and location can differ. This guide focuses on the Windows and macOS desktop client.

Step-by-step instructions

Open the Zoom desktop client and sign in if needed. Select your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner, then choose Settings. In the left column, select Chat. Look for a section related to chat notifications. The visible options may include showing unread message count, previews, or sound alerts.

To stop chat messages from playing a sound during meetings, clear the checkbox for the chat notification sound option. The wording may vary by version, but it is usually labeled to indicate a sound for incoming chat messages. To restore the sound later, return to the same screen and select the checkbox again.

Some versions include a separate setting for notifications while in a meeting or when the chat sidebar is open. If your client shows multiple chat notification options, review each one to avoid muting only part of the behavior. You can also leave visual chat previews enabled while turning off only the sound.

Check the output

Start or join a test meeting, then ask another participant to send a chat message. Check whether you receive the visual chat indicator without the notification sound. If you changed only the in-meeting chat sound, test it during an active meeting rather than in the main client window.

Keep in mind that Zoom may still play other meeting sounds, such as entry and exit chimes or the waiting room tone. Turning off chat notification sounds does not silence those alerts.

Common problems and next steps

If chats still make noise after clearing the checkbox, confirm that you changed the setting on the same device where you join the meeting. Zoom settings do not always sync between desktop and mobile apps. Restart the Zoom client after saving the change if the sound continues.

When only the visual alert is needed, keep chat previews enabled for your selected display options. For meetings that require stronger concentration, use the in-meeting chat controls to close the chat panel or temporarily mute the conversation. This does not change your global notification settings and is easy to reverse when the meeting ends.
