How to Manage and Mute Teams Meeting Chat Notifications
Learn how to mute Microsoft Teams meeting chat notifications, control meeting chat alerts, and reduce interruptions during calls.
Before you start
Muting a Teams meeting chat affects notifications for messages posted in the meeting chat panel, not the meeting audio. You can change this in the Teams desktop app or web app. The process is local to your account and does not require administrator access, but some notification rules may behave differently when an organization applies its own Teams messaging policies.
Check that you have the meeting chat available in the meeting window or in the Chat list. For the most predictable controls, use a current version of Microsoft Teams for desktop. The exact labels can vary slightly between classic Teams and the updated Teams client.
Step-by-step instructions
Use one of these methods depending on where you want to reduce the interruption.
Mute a single meeting chat
Open Teams and find the meeting chat in the Chat list. On the chat name, select More options, which may appear as an ellipsis or three-dot icon. Choose Mute. This stops notification sounds and banner alerts for that conversation while messages can still arrive in the chat panel.
To reverse the change, open the same menu and select Unmute. Muting one meeting chat does not change other chats, and it does not prevent other participants from posting messages.
Turn off meeting chat notifications during a meeting
During a call, the meeting window may show notifications for new chat messages in addition to banners from other Teams activity. If changing the conversation setting is not enough, mute the meeting chat from the meeting controls or the chat pane where available. Some meeting views show a notification control next to the chat entry or in the meeting options menu.
You can also temporarily reduce interruptions by setting your overall status to Do not disturb. Select your profile picture or status indicator, choose Do not disturb, and limit the duration if you only need it during the meeting. This changes general Teams notification behavior, so review the setting before leaving it active after the call.
Check the output
After you mute the conversation, send a test message from another account or ask a participant to post in the meeting chat. On your device, you should no longer hear the message sound or see a popup banner for that specific conversation. The unread message count may still appear next to the chat name.
This verification only confirms notification behavior. It does not change message delivery, chat history, or the ability to open and read the conversation. If the meeting is organized under a Teams policy that forces notifications, the mute control may not fully suppress every alert.
Common problems and next steps
If meeting chat notifications still appear after muting, confirm that you muted the correct conversation. Meeting chats can have similar names, especially for recurring meetings. Open the chat and check the title before changing the setting again.
When you need a broader solution, adjust notification preferences instead of muting many chats individually. Open Settings, go to Notifications, and review the options for chat messages, mentions, and meeting activity. Turning off sounds or banners there can reduce interruptions across all chats, but it also affects non-meeting conversations.
If the mute option is missing or disabled, the meeting may be part of a channel conversation or controlled by an organizational policy. In that case, contact your Teams administrator to confirm whether chat notification settings can be changed for your account.
