How to Manage Camera Permissions in Safari
Learn how to allow or block camera access for websites in Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and what to check when the camera permission is missing or not working.
Before you start
Safari controls camera access at the website level. When a site asks to use the camera, Safari shows a permission prompt; your choice applies to that site in the current browser. On Mac, Safari also needs permission from macOS before it can use the camera at all. On iPhone or iPad, Safari does not use a separate camera permission switch in iOS Settings, because photo and camera privacy settings are handled by the browser and the site request. Check that you are working with the current version of macOS, iOS, or iPadOS supported by your device, because older versions may show different label wording for website settings.
Step-by-step instructions
Allow camera access for one website on Mac
- Open Safari and go to the website that needs the camera.
- If the site requests camera access, choose Allow in the prompt that appears.
- If no prompt appears, open Safari Settings from the Safari menu.
- Select Websites, then choose Camera from the list on the left.
- Find the current website in the list of configured sites.
- Change its setting to Allow.
- Reload the page and accept the camera prompt if Safari asks again.
Change the default camera permission on Mac
- Open Safari Settings from the Safari menu.
- Select Websites and then Camera.
- Use the pop-up menu next to When visiting other websites.
- Choose Ask, Allow, or Deny according to the behavior you want for new sites.
- Keep existing website entries unchanged unless you need to remove or adjust them.
Remove or block a camera permission on Mac
- Open Safari Settings, select Websites, and then Camera.
- Select the website you want to change.
- Choose Deny to block it, or select the entry and choose Remove to delete the stored permission.
- Reload the site. If the stored permission was removed, Safari will ask again the next time the site requests the camera.
Allow or adjust camera access on iPhone and iPad
- Open Safari and load the website that needs camera access.
- Tap Allow when the site asks to use the camera.
- To change an existing decision, tap the Page Settings or Website Settings button in the address bar.
- Look for the Camera option and change it to Ask, Allow, or Deny for that site.
- Reload the page so the new permission takes effect.
Check the output
After changing the permission, reload the page or restart the camera request within the website. The site should show video from the selected camera without asking again, unless Safari is set to ask every time. Some web camera tools also display the current resolution or frame rate from the camera feed. These numbers come from the camera and browser implementation, not from Safari's permission panel, so verify them inside the site's own camera preview. If the page shows a black preview or an error, check that the correct camera is selected in the page controls and that no other application is using the camera exclusively.
Common problems and next steps
No camera prompt appears
If the site should ask for the camera but no prompt appears, check the website-specific permission in Safari. On Mac, open Safari Settings, choose Websites and Camera, and make sure the site is not set to Deny. If the setting is Ask but no prompt appears, reload the page and trigger the camera action again. Safari may also suppress repeated prompts after a site has been blocked.
Safari is not listed in system camera settings
On Mac, Safari must appear in System Settings under Privacy and Security and Camera before a website can receive video. If Safari is not present, visit a camera site and attempt to allow access; macOS then asks for permission and adds the entry. If macOS has already denied camera access to Safari, open System Settings, select Privacy and Security, choose Camera, and enable Safari. Quit and reopen Safari afterward.
Camera works but video is dark or grainy
A weak image is usually caused by lighting or camera selection rather than Safari permissions. Face a light source or add light in front of you, avoid a bright window behind you, and clean the camera lens. In the page's camera controls, confirm the selected camera is the built-in or external device you intended to use.
Another app may be using the camera
If the preview is black or the camera indicator behaves unexpectedly, close other applications that may be using the camera, such as video-call or camera apps. Then reload the Safari page and try the camera request again.
