USB-C to HDMI Adapter Not Working on a MacBook

Practical steps to find why a USB-C to HDMI adapter is not working on a MacBook, isolate the fault, apply reversible fixes, and confirm the result.

Identify the symptom and environment

Start by describing what happens when the adapter is connected. Note whether the MacBook shows no external display, the screen flickers or changes resolution and then returns, audio still plays from the Mac, or a display is detected but stays black. Record the MacBook model, the macOS version, the specific adapter or hub, the HDMI cable length, and whether the cable is marked as High Speed. The issue can occur after waking from sleep, after reconnecting a display, or when the adapter is attached through a dock.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Separate the possible points of failure: the USB-C port, the adapter, the HDMI cable, the display input, and macOS display detection. First connect the adapter directly to another USB-C port on the same Mac. If one port works and another does not, use the working port for this connection and note the difference. When the Mac has multiple USB-C ports, some models may have different external display support depending on the port.

Next test the same adapter and cable with a different HDMI display or television. If the second display works, check the original display by connecting another HDMI source to the same input. This helps identify a faulty display input or an input that is not set to the correct source. If another adapter or cable is available, test each component one at a time so only one part is changed.

For apps and operating-system permissions, open a plain desktop view and confirm whether the desktop itself appears on the external display. If a camera, capture, or conferencing application does not show the external image, switch to the built-in desktop or another app to verify whether detection is working at the system level. This can separate an app-specific selection problem from a connection fault.

Try reversible fixes in order

Begin with the least disruptive changes. Unplug the adapter from the Mac and the HDMI cable from the adapter, wait a few seconds, then reconnect the cable to the adapter before connecting the adapter to the Mac. Use a direct connection to the Mac instead of a hub or dock while testing.

Check display detection in System Settings. The location varies by macOS version: look for Displays, then hold the Option key if a Detect Displays control is available, or check the display arrangement view. When the external display appears, verify that the resolution and refresh rate are not set to an unsupported value. Lowering the refresh rate on the external display can sometimes restore a stable image, especially with longer HDMI cables.

Put the Mac to sleep and wake it, close and reopen the lid if using the built-in display, or choose Apple menu and then Restart while the display and adapter remain connected. These actions can trigger a new detection attempt without changing settings.

If the adapter passes through power and includes other ports, confirm that any external power source used with it matches the adapter maker's specification. A bus-powered adapter connected through another unpowered hub may receive insufficient power, but a direct connection to the Mac should be tested first.

Confirm the result

Verification means the external display appears and stays stable during normal use. Open a window and drag it from the built-in screen to the external screen. Play a short video with sound if audio over HDMI is needed, and confirm that the display remains connected after the Mac wakes from sleep. Check that the resolution and refresh rate shown for the external display are stable and that no repeated connect and disconnect messages appear.

If the problem remains

Keep a record of which ports, cables, adapters, displays, and macOS settings were tested and what was observed. A single failing combination does not prove that the adapter or Mac is faulty. If a different adapter works in the same port with the same cable and display, the adapter is the remaining variable. If the same adapter fails on multiple ports and with a known-working display, the adapter may need replacement or its maker's support.

Do not disable system security features to solve a display connection problem. If the Mac has passed its supported macOS version range for the adapter or hub, or if no tested component combination works, contact Apple support or the adapter maker. Describe the exact Mac model, macOS version, adapter brand and model, cable type, display model, and the observations from each test.
