How to Compress a PNG Without Losing Quality

A practical guide to lossless PNG compression: what it means, when it works, and how to choose a tool or online compressor without reducing image quality.

What lossless PNG compression means

A lossless PNG compressor reduces file size without changing the image data. When you decompress or reopen the compressed file, the pixels are identical to the original. This is different from lossy compression, which saves space by discarding some visual detail and can introduce blurring, banding or other artifacts.

The phrase "without losing quality" can be ambiguous. A true lossless compressor preserves every pixel exactly, so there is no visual quality loss at all. Some tools marketed as high-quality compressors are actually near-lossless or visually lossless, meaning they change pixels in ways that are hard to notice but are not technically identical. If you need the file to remain pixel-for-pixel the same, choose a tool that explicitly uses lossless PNG compression.

Why PNG files can often be made smaller without quality loss

PNG is a lossless format, but many PNG files contain unnecessary data. A lossless compressor can remove redundant metadata, optimize filtering choices, reorder color data, or apply better compression strategies without altering the final image. The amount saved depends on the source file, but graphics with large flat areas, screenshots, diagrams and simple illustrations often compress well.

Choosing a lossless PNG compressor

For a genuinely lossless result, look for tools that describe their output as lossless, pixel-identical, or based on lossless PNG optimization. Common categories include:

  • Command-line or desktop optimizers that rewrite PNG data more efficiently
  • Online PNG compressors with a lossless option
  • Image editors that offer "save as optimized PNG" or similar export settings

Be careful with online tools that only promise smaller size or "high quality." Some use lossy conversion, resize the image, strip color profiles, or convert to a different format while keeping a PNG extension. If exact pixel fidelity matters, verify that the tool states lossless operation rather than assuming it from the word "quality."

How to use an online PNG compressor without losing quality

If you use an online lossless PNG compressor, the basic process is usually:

  • Upload the original PNG.
  • Select a lossless or same-quality option if one is available.
  • Run the compression and download the result.
  • Compare the downloaded file with your original before replacing it.

The final comparison matters. You can check file size and visually inspect the image at full zoom. For strict work, compare pixel values or file hashes with a known lossless tool. This also helps you detect any unexpected color profile removal or metadata change.

What lossless PNG compression cannot fix

Lossless compression cannot reduce file size as much as lossy methods. Photographic images in particular may stay relatively large compared with JPEG or WebP because PNG stores all image data. If your main need is a dramatically smaller file and you can accept small visual changes, a visually lossless or lossy format may be more appropriate.

Also note that a lossless PNG compressor should not be confused with tools for editing call backgrounds or virtual camera effects. Those alter what appears in the frame. This guide is only about compressing the PNG file itself while keeping its picture content unchanged.
