Logitech C920 Webcam Driver: Finding the Correct Software

The Logitech C920 uses the standard USB camera driver built into Windows, macOS and Linux. Learn when Logitech software helps and how to fix detection problems.

Do you need a driver for the Logitech C920?

In most cases, no separate driver download is needed. The C920 family is a USB Video Class (UVC) camera, so Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS load a generic camera driver that is already part of the operating system as soon as you plug it in. Video call apps, browsers and recording tools can use the camera through that built-in driver. What Logitech offers is optional companion software for adjusting image settings such as zoom, focus, exposure and white balance. Which app fits depends on your exact model variant and operating system.

If you are looking for a C920 driver because the camera is not working, the cause is usually a connection, permission or app-selection problem rather than a missing driver. The sections below separate those cases so you can tell whether to install anything at all.

How the C920 works with your computer

UVC is a standard that defines how a USB camera describes itself and delivers video. Because the C920 follows it, the operating system recognizes the camera, lists its supported resolutions and frame rates, and exposes basic image controls without vendor code. The built-in microphones work the same way through the standard USB audio class, so they appear as a separate audio input device next to your other microphones.

Several variants share the C920 name, including the C920 HD Pro, C920s, C920e and C920x. Logitech's software support lists can differ between these variants and change over time, so check the exact model name on the camera label or packaging before looking it up on Logitech's official support page.

Logitech has released several camera apps over the years, including Logitech Capture, Logi Tune and G HUB, and older guides may mention other utilities. Which of them currently supports your C920 version on your operating system is a version-dependent detail. Confirm it on the support page for your exact model rather than relying on an older tutorial.

Companion software adjusts how the camera captures the image. It does not change the hardware limits: the C920 is advertised for 1080p video at up to 30 frames per second, with 720p also supported. Depending on the app and camera, your adjustments may or may not persist after you reconnect the camera or restart the computer, so check them again afterward.

Choosing what to install

  • The camera works in your call or recording app and the image looks fine: you do not need to install anything.
  • You want manual focus, exposure, white balance or zoom: install the Logitech app listed for your model and operating system on its support page.
  • You record or stream: some recording apps can open the camera's own property controls directly, which may make a separate app unnecessary.
  • Your computer is managed by an employer or school: your IT team may control which software can be installed, so ask them before downloading anything.

If the camera is not detected

  • Plug the camera directly into a USB port on the computer instead of a hub or monitor port, then try a different port.
  • Check whether the system sees the device: on Windows, look in Device Manager under Cameras or Imaging devices; on a Mac, check the USB section of System Information; on Linux, the lsusb command lists connected USB devices.
  • Restart the computer with the camera connected.
  • On Windows, if the camera appears with an error, uninstall the device in Device Manager and reconnect it so Windows reinstalls its built-in driver. Pending Windows updates can also be worth installing.
  • Test the camera on another computer. If it is not detected there either, the problem is likely the hardware or cable.

If it is detected but shows no video

  • Check camera permission at the operating system level: the camera privacy settings on Windows and the Camera list under Privacy and Security on macOS must allow your app.
  • In a browser, check that the site is allowed to use the camera.
  • Check the selected camera in your app's video settings. Laptops often default to the built-in camera rather than the C920.
  • Close other apps that may already be using the camera, since a busy camera can be unavailable to a second app.
  • If you want the C920's audio, select its microphone separately in the app's audio settings.

If the image works but looks dark, grainy or choppy, check the resolution and frame rate your app is requesting before installing anything. Lighting matters too: in dim rooms, many webcams lengthen exposure, which can lower the frame rate and add noise. Adding light in front of you usually improves the picture more than any software adjustment.

Limits and related questions

Download Logitech software only from Logitech's official support pages. Third-party driver download sites and driver updater tools are unnecessary for a UVC camera and can bundle unwanted software.

Software cannot add capabilities the camera does not have, such as 4K or 60 frames per second recording. Some older articles describe on-camera H.264 encoding for the C920. Whether your unit and software expose it depends on the hardware revision and software support, so treat those instructions as outdated unless you can confirm them for your camera.

Companion apps may request permissions, offer account sign-in or include usage-data options. Review their settings and privacy policy yourself rather than assuming how they handle data. For physical privacy, the C920s includes a privacy shutter, while other variants rely on unplugging the camera or covering the lens.

On Linux, the C920 uses the kernel's standard UVC driver. Logitech's desktop apps are generally offered for Windows and macOS, so Linux users usually adjust image controls with general tools such as v4l2-ctl or guvcview. On ChromeOS, the camera works with the built-in camera app and supported web apps without extra software.

If the camera still fails after you have checked the connection, permissions and selected camera, and it also fails on another computer, contact Logitech support about repair or warranty options. Reinstalling software will not fix a hardware fault.
