How to Start a Video Call by Link with Linkello
Start a Linkello video call by link: prepare your camera and microphone, share the call link, check that others can join, and fix common problems.
In a link-based video call, one person opens a call room and shares its address, and others join from their own devices. This guide covers how to prepare your camera and microphone, create and share a Linkello call link, and confirm the call works. Button labels and options can change between versions, so use the steps below as a checklist and follow the wording you see on screen.
Before you start
A video call by link does not run only on your computer. It depends on an online service, and your audio and video travel over the network to the other participants. Before you share anything sensitive, check Linkello's own help and privacy information for these points: whether you need an account, how long a link stays valid, who can join with it, and whether calls or chat messages are stored. Do not assume a link is private just because it is hard to guess.
- A current version of your browser, or of the app if you use one.
- A camera and microphone connected before you open the call page, so the browser can detect them.
- A stable internet connection. Upload speed matters as much as download speed for sending video.
- Permission to use the camera and microphone on the device. On work or school computers, an administrator may block this.
- Lighting in front of you rather than behind you, so your face is not in silhouette.
Test your camera and microphone in a browser before the call. If they work in a test but not in the call, the problem is in the call settings or permissions, not the hardware.
Step-by-step instructions
- 1. Open Linkello and find the option to create or start a new call.
- 2. If you are asked for a display name or room name, enter only what the form requires.
- 3. When the browser asks to use your camera and microphone, choose Allow. If you dismissed the prompt, open the site permissions control next to the address bar and allow both devices, then reload the page.
- 4. In the preview or settings, check the selected camera and microphone. A laptop with an external webcam, a virtual camera or a capture card can show several devices, so pick the correct capture source.
- 5. Copy the call link with the copy option the service provides. If the room address appears in the address bar, you can copy it from there.
- 6. Send the link through a channel you trust, such as a chat, email or calendar invite, and only to the people who should join.
- 7. Keep the call page open while others join. Closing the tab or browser may disconnect you.
If Linkello offers a choice of video quality, keep in mind that a higher resolution and frame rate use more bandwidth and processing power. Browser-based calls usually adjust bitrate and encoding to match the connection, so quality may drop briefly when the network is busy. On a weak connection, choose a lower quality setting, if one is available, rather than lose audio.
Desktop and mobile handle permissions differently. On a phone or tablet, the browser itself may also need camera and microphone access in the system settings, in addition to the permission for the site. Every step here can be undone. You can leave the call at any time, stop sharing the link, and remove the site's camera and microphone permission in your browser settings when you no longer need it.
Check the output
Before anyone joins, look at your own preview. It should show a live image from the camera you chose, not a frozen frame or a different device. Many call tools mirror your self-view while other people see you unmirrored, so reversed text in your preview does not necessarily mean the others see it reversed.
- Open the link in a private browser window or on a second device to confirm it leads to the same call. Use headphones or mute one side to avoid feedback.
- Speak at a normal volume and watch for a microphone level indicator, if the call screen shows one.
- Ask the first person who joins to confirm they can see and hear you clearly.
- If you need a recording, check whether Linkello supports it, where files are saved and which recording format is used. Otherwise use a separate screen recorder. Get everyone's consent before you record.
A sharp preview on your screen does not guarantee the same quality for others. What each participant receives also depends on their connection, device and browser.
Common problems and next steps
No permission prompt or a black video window
Open the site permissions next to the address bar and make sure the camera and microphone are allowed. Then check the operating system. On Windows, open Settings, then Privacy & security, then Camera. On macOS, open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Camera, and make sure your browser is allowed. Reload the call page after changing any permission.
Camera in use or the wrong device
Many webcams can be used by only one application at a time. Close other call, streaming or recording apps that might be holding the camera, then rejoin. If the right camera is connected but not used, change the selected device in the call settings or in the browser's site settings.
Others cannot open the link
Make sure the full link was copied and that everyone has the same version. Messaging apps sometimes cut long links or add extra characters. Check whether the call is still active or the link has expired, and ask the person to try another browser. Company networks may block some calling services, in which case their IT department has to allow it.
Choppy video, delay or echo
Pause large downloads, cloud syncing and streaming on the same network. Move closer to the router or use a wired connection, and lower the video quality if the call offers that option. If the connection stays weak, turn off video to keep audio usable. To stop echo, use headphones and mute your microphone when you are not speaking.
Dark or grainy image
Add light in front of you or face a window. In low light, many webcams lengthen exposure, which can lower the effective frame rate and add noise, so better lighting often improves smoothness as well as brightness.
If the same camera or microphone problem appears in other calling services and in a browser test, look into the device, its driver or its connection. If it happens only in Linkello, check the service's current help information for supported browsers and known limits.
