How to Adjust Webcam Focus in Klipper

Practical steps for improving a camera image in Klipper when the webcam feed looks soft, including focus, resolution, lighting, and browser camera selection.

Before you start

Klipper itself does not process the webcam image. The camera stream normally comes from a separate service such as a webcam server or browser-based camera tool, so focus adjustments are made on the camera or in the software that exposes the stream. Check which camera is selected before changing settings: a browser may default to a built-in laptop camera instead of the external webcam pointed at the printer.

Step-by-step instructions

First confirm that the correct video device is being used. In the webcam interface, open the camera settings or source menu and select the external webcam if more than one device is listed. If the selected camera has a physical focus ring, rotate it slowly while watching a detailed object at the normal printing distance.

For a fixed-focus camera, move the camera closer to or farther from the subject until the print area looks sharp. Small changes in distance have more effect when the lens is close to the model. If the mount can be adjusted, fix the camera at the distance where the nozzle area and nearby print surface stay clear.

If the camera supports automatic focus, use it to lock onto the print surface, then disable autofocus if that option is available. This can prevent the image from drifting when the print head or lighting changes. Cameras that do not expose focus controls in the browser often need adjustment through their own configuration utility or web interface.

Keep the image settings moderate while testing. Set the resolution high enough to show fine details, but avoid extreme values that make the feed lag. If the frame rate drops heavily, reduce the resolution or close other camera previews. Changes to resolution and frame rate do not change optical focus, but a smoother feed can make a correctly focused image easier to judge.

Check the output

Place a small object with clear edges, such as a printed calibration shape, under the camera and view the live feed. Text or thin lines should be distinguishable without fringes or blur. If only part of the frame is sharp, adjust camera position or angle rather than expecting the whole depth of the printer to be in focus.

Common problems and next steps

A dim image often looks unfocused even when the lens is set correctly. Add steady lighting over the print surface and avoid pointing the camera toward a bright window or lamp. If the browser asks for camera permission, allow access only for the expected camera and reload the stream before judging image quality.

If the external webcam is still not shown, check that it is connected before the webcam service starts and that no other application is using the device. On devices with a sliding privacy cover, open the cover completely: a partly closed cover can make the feed look hazy or out of focus.

  • Confirm the selected camera is the external webcam, not the laptop camera.\nAdjust manual focus at the actual working distance from the print surface.\nTurn off autofocus after locking onto the subject when possible.\nImprove lighting before changing resolution or frame rate.\nReconnect or restart the camera service if the expected device is unavailable.
