MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Kaspersky Blocking Webcam: Restore Camera Access

Why Kaspersky may block or freeze your webcam video, how to allow the app you need, and how to make sure the webcam's microphone still captures your voice.

The short answer

Kaspersky's consumer security products include a webcam protection feature that can stop an application from using the camera. When that happens, the video feed may go black, show a frozen frame, or report that the camera is unavailable or in use. To restore access, allow that specific application in Kaspersky's webcam protection settings. If you are not sure Kaspersky is the cause, pause the protection briefly as a test. One condition matters for anyone relying on the webcam's built-in microphone: camera access and microphone access are separate permissions. Unblocking the video does not prove your voice is reaching the app, and a blocked camera does not necessarily mean the microphone is silent.

No version-specific documentation was available for this guide. The setting names and locations below describe the general pattern. Exact menus differ between Kaspersky editions and versions.

Confirm that Kaspersky is causing the block

  • Kaspersky shows a notification that an application's attempt to access the camera was blocked.
  • The camera works normally while Kaspersky's protection is paused and fails again when it resumes.
  • The camera works in one application but not in another, and the operating system's camera permissions are already allowed.
  • The application you were prompted about earlier is the one that now shows a black or frozen picture.

A frozen image alone does not prove a security block. Frozen or stuttering video can also come from a USB connection or power problem, a faulty or outdated driver, another program holding the camera, or settings inside the conferencing app. Pausing protection for a short test is the quickest way to tell these causes apart. Turn protection back on as soon as the test is finished.

Restore camera access in Kaspersky

  • Open the Kaspersky application's main window.
  • Go to the settings and find the privacy or webcam protection section.
  • Review the list of applications that are allowed or blocked from using the camera.
  • Allow the conferencing, streaming or recording application you need.
  • If you chose to block the app at an earlier prompt, change that decision so the app is allowed.
  • Fully close and reopen the application so it requests the camera again.
  • If the app is still blocked, temporarily disable webcam protection to confirm the cause, then re-enable it.

Allowing individual trusted applications is preferable to switching webcam protection off permanently. The feature exists to stop software you did not approve from using your camera.

What this means for webcam microphone audio

A USB webcam with a built-in microphone usually appears to the operating system as two separate devices. One is a video capture device and the other is an audio input device. Kaspersky's webcam protection is aimed at the video device. Some Kaspersky versions also offer separate control over microphone access. The available evidence does not establish whether your version does, so check the privacy settings for a microphone or audio entry as well.

There are two practical consequences. First, if your video is blocked but the microphone still works, people on a call may hear you while seeing a black or frozen picture. Do not assume you are muted just because the camera is off. Second, if the video returns but nobody can hear you, the cause lies elsewhere. Likely causes include a microphone permission, a separate audio block, or the wrong input device selected in the app.

Checks outside Kaspersky

  • In the operating system's privacy settings, confirm that both camera and microphone access are allowed, including for desktop applications on Windows.
  • In the conferencing app's audio settings, pick the webcam's microphone by name rather than relying on a generic default device.
  • Watch the app's input level meter while you speak to confirm your voice is actually being captured.
  • Close other programs that may already be using the camera or microphone.
  • Unplug and reconnect the webcam, or try a different USB port, if video freezes even with protection paused.

Gaps in this guide

This guide does not cover exact menu paths for particular Kaspersky versions, and it does not include test measurements or reports of specific webcam models. If the camera or microphone still fails after you allow the app and check the operating system's permissions, consult Kaspersky's official support documentation for your product version.
