How to Test Your Webcam in Kaltura
Check that your webcam works in Kaltura: set camera permission, pick the right camera, review the preview and a test clip, and fix common problems.
Testing your webcam in Kaltura means confirming three things before a recording or live session: the Kaltura tool you use can reach your camera, the correct device is selected, and the picture is good enough to use. Kaltura covers several products, so start by working out which one you will use.
Before you start
Kaltura's browser-based recording and live room tools get camera access through your web browser, so the browser needs permission. Kaltura Capture is a desktop application installed on your computer. It does not use browser permissions, but it does need operating system permission. How recordings are stored, uploaded, retained and shared depends on your organization's Kaltura setup. Confirm those details with your administrator instead of assuming them.
- Sign-in access to your organization's Kaltura site, or the session link from your instructor or host.
- An up-to-date supported browser for web-based tools, or Kaltura Capture installed if your organization uses it.
- A connected webcam that no other app is using, such as another video call app, a camera utility or another browser tab.
- Camera access allowed in your operating system.
- Even, front-facing lighting where you will sit.
Step-by-step instructions
Button names and layouts vary between Kaltura versions and between organizations, and administrators can disable or rename features. The steps below describe what to look for rather than exact menu paths. Follow them in order.
- Close any other app or browser tab that might be using the camera.
- Check operating system camera access. On Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. On Windows 10, open Settings > Privacy > Camera. Make sure camera access is on, both for your browser and for desktop apps if you use Kaltura Capture. On macOS, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera (System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Camera on older versions) and enable your browser or Kaltura Capture.
- Open the Kaltura tool you will actually use. This might be the recording option in your media portal or course, the live session link, or Kaltura Capture.
- If the browser asks for camera permission, choose Allow. If you dismissed or blocked the prompt, click the site information icon next to the address bar, set Camera to Allow, then reload the page.
- Find the camera preview. Recording tools usually show it before you start recording. Live rooms typically show it on a setup screen or after you turn your camera on.
- If the preview shows the wrong camera or nothing at all, open the device or settings selector in the Kaltura tool and choose your camera from the list. Built-in cameras, external webcams and virtual cameras created by other software can have similar names, so try each likely entry.
- If your tool can record, make a short test clip and play it back. Delete it afterwards if you do not need it, provided your account has permission to delete media.
If you change camera permission while Kaltura is open, reload the page or restart Kaltura Capture. Many apps only detect permission and device changes when they start.
Check the output
A working preview proves the tool can reach your camera. It does not show exactly what viewers or a finished recording will get. Resolution and frame rate depend on the camera, the tool's settings, your computer's load and, in live sessions, your network connection.
- Selected camera: briefly cover the lens. The preview should go dark, which confirms the expected device is active.
- Mirroring: some previews show a mirrored image. Check the test clip playback to see the orientation viewers will get.
- Lighting: your face should be evenly lit, without a bright window or lamp behind you.
- Frame rate: wave your hand slowly. Choppy motion can come from low light, which makes many webcams lengthen exposure. It can also come from a busy computer or a webcam connected through a crowded USB hub.
- Resolution: if the Kaltura tool shows a resolution or quality setting, check it. Otherwise judge sharpness from the test clip, and do not assume any particular resolution.
- Playback: uploaded clips may need processing time before they play. Check the clip's visibility or publishing settings before you leave it in your account.
Common problems and next steps
- Black preview or no camera listed: confirm operating system permission, close other apps that use the camera, reconnect a USB webcam, then restart the browser or Kaltura Capture.
- Camera permission blocked: reset Camera to Allow in the browser's site settings and reload. On school or work computers, device policies set by IT can block access, and only IT can change them.
- Wrong camera selected: choose the correct device in the Kaltura tool's selector. You can also set the default camera in your browser's privacy or site settings.
- Camera works elsewhere but not in Kaltura: first test it in the Camera app on Windows or Photo Booth on macOS. If it works there, update the browser, try another supported browser, or try a private window, which usually disables extensions.
- Kaltura Capture does not see the camera: grant the app camera access in the operating system, then fully quit and reopen the app.
- Dark or grainy image: add front-facing light and reduce strong backlight before changing any software settings.
- Others cannot see you in a live session: check that your camera is switched on in the room. Some sessions let hosts control or restrict participant video, so ask the host.
If the camera still fails, contact your organization's Kaltura administrator or help desk. Tell them which Kaltura tool you used, your browser and its version, your operating system, and what the preview shows.
