How to Use the Jio 4G Voice Calling App

Set up the Jio 4G voice calling app to make HD voice and video calls over Jio 4G: prerequisites, setup steps, how to check calls work and fixes for common issues.

Jio's 4G voice calling app was built so that people with a Jio SIM, or a JioFi hotspot, could make voice and video calls over Jio's 4G network when their phone could not do this on its own. This guide covers installing the app, signing in, granting the right permissions, and confirming that calls work. It also covers what to do when they don't.

Before you start

The app does not handle calls on your phone alone. Calls are routed through Jio's network, so you need an active Jio connection and a working data link to that network. Sign-in is tied to your Jio mobile number.

  • An active Jio SIM in your phone, or a JioFi device your phone can connect to over Wi-Fi.
  • A compatible Android or iOS phone. Check the app's store listing for the current minimum version.
  • Access to the Jio number for the one-time password (OTP) sent during sign-in.
  • A working microphone and earpiece or speaker. For video calls, you also need a front camera.

The app has been renamed over the years. Earlier versions were called Jio4GVoice, and later listings have used names such as JioCall and JioJoin. Install only the listing published by Jio in your phone's official app store, and confirm it is still offered for your device. If your phone already supports VoLTE calling with a Jio SIM, you may not need the app.

Step-by-step instructions

  • 1. Open your phone's official app store, search for the Jio calling app, and confirm the publisher is Jio before installing.
  • 2. If you use a JioFi device, connect your phone to its Wi-Fi network first. Otherwise, make sure mobile data is on for your Jio SIM.
  • 3. Open the app and enter your Jio number when asked. Then enter the OTP you receive to verify the number.
  • 4. Grant the permissions the app requests. It needs microphone access for voice calls and camera access for video calls. Contacts access is optional but lets you call saved contacts from inside the app.
  • 5. If the app asks to become your default phone or messaging app, decide whether you want that. You can change the default later in your phone's settings, so this step is reversible.
  • 6. Choose a contact or dial a number, then select a voice call or a video call.

Screen layouts and option names vary between app versions and between Android and iOS. Follow the prompts shown in your installed version rather than expecting a fixed menu path. If you later want to undo the setup, reset your default calling app in system settings, revoke permissions, and uninstall the app.

The app asks for access to sensitive data such as contacts, call history and possibly messages. Review each request before accepting. Read the privacy information shown in the app and its store listing to see what data is collected and how it is handled, rather than assuming it is kept only on your phone.

Check the output

Place a short call to someone you can reach another way. Confirm that both sides hear each other clearly and that audio switches correctly between the earpiece, the speaker and any wired or Bluetooth headset. For a video call, check that the other person sees your camera image and that switching between front and rear cameras works if your version offers it.

Call quality depends on your 4G signal and, with JioFi, on the Wi-Fi link to the hotspot. A weak signal can cause choppy audio, delay or a dropped call. Video calls need more bandwidth than voice calls, so they are affected first. Make a test call where coverage is good before relying on the app in a weaker area.

Common problems and next steps

  • OTP does not arrive: confirm the number you entered is your active Jio number, wait a moment, and then request a new code.
  • The app does not detect your Jio connection: check that mobile data is on for the Jio SIM, or that you are connected to your JioFi Wi-Fi, then restart the app.
  • The other person cannot hear you: open your phone's app permissions and confirm microphone access is allowed. Then check that no other app is using the microphone.
  • Video does not start: allow camera access and close other apps that may be using the camera.
  • No sound through a headset: disconnect and reconnect the headset, then select it again as the audio output during the call.
  • The app is not in your app store: it may have been renamed or withdrawn for your device or region. Check Jio's official support channels for the current calling option.
  • Your phone supports VoLTE: try calling through the built-in dialer with your Jio SIM, which may make the app unnecessary.

If calls still fail after these checks, contact Jio customer support with your phone model, operating system version and app version. They can confirm whether your number and device are supported for app-based calling.
