Iriun Webcam Flickering: Troubleshooting

Why Iriun Webcam video flickers or freezes, and the order of checks to try: lighting, Wi-Fi or USB connection, phone power settings, resolution and app conflicts.

The short answer

When Iriun Webcam video flickers, the cause is usually one of three things. Artificial lighting can interact with the phone camera's exposure. The connection between the phone and the computer may be unstable. Or the phone may be throttling or pausing the app to save power. Work through them in that order, because each check is quick and rules out a large group of causes. One condition changes the answer. If the picture is not pulsing in brightness but stuttering, freezing or dropping to black for moments, treat it as a connection or performance problem first, not a lighting problem.

No confirmed, Iriun-specific evidence was available for this guide. That means no documented bug reports, version notes or measured test results. The steps below rest on general principles of how phone cameras, wireless video and computer camera inputs behave. Where a setting depends on your Iriun version, phone model or operating system, the guide says so.

First, identify which kind of flicker you see

"Flickering" can describe several different symptoms. Naming yours points you to the right check:

  • Brightness pulsing, or horizontal bands rolling across the image: most often a lighting and exposure issue.
  • The image brightens and darkens every few seconds: often auto-exposure reacting to a changing scene, a window or a screen behind you.
  • Jerky motion, brief freezes, or a frozen frame that then jumps ahead: most often a Wi-Fi or USB connection issue, or the phone or computer struggling to keep up.
  • The picture briefly goes black or swaps to another camera: often the phone app being paused, the connection dropping and reconnecting, or another program grabbing the camera.

Check 1: Lighting and exposure

Many LED and fluorescent lights pulse rapidly in step with the mains power supply, which runs at 60 Hz in the US. You cannot see the pulsing yourself. A phone camera can capture it as flicker or rolling bands, especially when it picks a fast shutter speed. To test this, switch off the overhead lights, use daylight or a different lamp, and watch whether the flicker stops. If it does, lighting is the cause.

To fix lighting flicker, use a steadier light source, such as daylight or a lamp that does not flicker on camera. Some setups also offer an anti-flicker or anti-banding setting, usually with 50 Hz and 60 Hz options. Whether you have it depends on your Iriun version and phone, so look in the Iriun app on both the phone and the computer. If you find it, choose the option that matches US mains power. For brightness that pulses every few seconds, keep bright windows and monitors out of the frame, or lock exposure if your version allows it.

Check 2: The connection between phone and computer

Iriun sends video from the phone to the computer over Wi-Fi or, depending on platform and version, over a USB cable. Wireless video suffers when the network is congested, the signal is weak, or the phone and computer are on different bands or access points. The usual symptoms are stutter, freezes and dropouts. Try these in order:

  • Move the phone and computer closer to the router, or remove obstacles between them.
  • Pause large downloads, streams or cloud backups on the same network.
  • Make sure both devices are on the same network.
  • If your setup supports it, switch to a USB connection and compare. Wired connections are generally less affected by interference. On Android, USB setups often require developer options such as USB debugging, but the exact steps vary by phone and Iriun version.

Check 3: The phone's power, heat and background behavior

Phones save battery and limit heat by slowing down or pausing apps. A paused or throttled Iriun app can cause frames to drop, freezes, or brief black frames. The following steps reduce this:

  • Keep the Iriun app open in the foreground during the call.
  • Connect the phone to a charger.
  • Turn off battery saver or low-power mode.
  • On Android, exclude Iriun from battery optimization if your phone offers that option.
  • Give the phone airflow, and remove a thick case if the phone gets hot. Heat can cause throttling that shows up as stutter.

Check 4: Resolution and computer load

Higher resolutions send more data and demand more processing on both devices. If your Iriun version lets you choose the resolution, try a lower one and see whether the stutter disappears. On the computer, close programs you don't need. Video effects in your meeting app, such as background blur, virtual backgrounds or low-light adjustment, can also add flicker, especially at the edges of the image. Turn them off as a test.

Check 5: Camera conflicts and input selection

Three separate things are worth keeping apart here. Detection means the computer sees the Iriun virtual camera. Permission means the app or browser is allowed to use the camera. Input selection means the app is actually set to Iriun as its active camera. If you see a flickering picture at all, detection and permission are already working. The remaining question is whether one program has the right input to itself. If several apps try to use the camera at once, the image can drop out or switch between sources. Close other video apps and browser tabs that use the camera. Then confirm in your meeting app's video settings that Iriun is the selected camera, not a built-in webcam.

To find out whether the meeting app is part of the problem, preview the Iriun feed in the Iriun desktop window or a basic camera viewer. If the picture is steady there but flickers in your meeting app, look at that app's video settings and effects. If it flickers everywhere, the cause lies earlier in the chain: lighting, connection or phone.

Check 6: Update both sides

Iriun runs as an app on the phone and as a program on the computer. Update both to their current versions, then restart both devices, since mismatched or outdated components can cause unstable behavior. No version-specific fixes were confirmed for this guide, so treat updating as a general step, not a known cure.

What if the microphone is also affected?

Flickering is a video capture problem. Audio comes through a separate input with its own permissions and selection, and video flicker does not by itself mean the microphone is faulty. If sound also cuts out at the same moments as the picture freezes, that points to the shared connection, so focus on Check 2. Otherwise, troubleshoot the microphone separately in your meeting app's audio input settings.

When to look further

If flicker continues under steady lighting, over a stable connection, with the phone charging and the app in the foreground, at a lower resolution, and in a basic camera viewer, try another phone or computer if you have one. That shows which device is responsible. You can then take the problem to Iriun's official support channels with a clear description of what you have already ruled out.
