What to Do When an iPhone Screen Recording Didn't Save

Step-by-step help for iPhone users when a screen recording does not appear in Photos. Covers likely causes, quick checks and reversible fixes.

Before you start

Screen recording on iPhone is handled locally by iOS. The recording is normally saved as a video in the Photos app. If it did not appear there, the issue is usually caused by low storage, an interrupted recording, restrictions from content protection, or the recording being stopped before enough data was written. Check the most likely limitation first: make sure the iPhone has free storage available before starting another recording.

Step-by-step instructions

Open Photos and check the Library tab, not only the Recents album. A new screen recording may be sorted by the date stored in its metadata, so it can appear below newer items if the date is older or incorrect.

Look in the Albums tab under Screen Recordings. On current iOS versions, recordings are grouped there. Also check the Recently Deleted album: if the recording was deleted accidentally, it can be recovered within the retention period shown by iOS.

Open Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage. If storage is full or nearly full, the system may not write a completed recording. Remove clutter through iOS storage recommendations or offload apps temporarily, then record again.

Open Control Center and confirm the Screen Recording control is live: a red status indicator or timer can mean recording is still running. If so, stop it and wait briefly while iOS writes the file. A very short stop-start sequence sometimes does not produce a saved clip.

If you were recording video from a protected app, playback may be blocked or the recording may not capture image content. This is not a file-recovery problem and cannot be fixed by restarting the device.

Check the output

Open the video in Photos and play it. Confirm that the duration, audio and screen movement are present. iOS screen recordings are saved as video files, not as standalone audio files; if only a black picture with working audio appears, the content may have been blocked by the app being recorded.

If the recording is very short, check its length in Photos. A recording stopped immediately may produce a file that is easy to overlook. Format and resolution depend on the device and iOS version, so do not assume a missing file based only on file size.

Common problems and next steps

If the screen recording still does not appear, restart the iPhone and try a short test recording with no protected content. Free up storage first and wait several seconds after stopping the recording before checking Photos.

If recordings fail repeatedly while storage is available, check whether an iOS update is pending. In some cases, updating iOS can restore normal saving behavior, but do not assume an update will recover a recording that was never written.

If the recording is visible in Photos but will not play properly, try opening it in the Files app if it is stored in iCloud Drive instead of on the device. For recordings that were never saved, there is no reliable iPhone setting that can recreate missing video data.
