How to Fix iPhone Microphone Crackling

Practical steps to find and reduce iPhone microphone crackling in calls, videos and voice recordings, from cleaning and settings to isolating the fault.

Identify the symptom and environment

Start by noting exactly when the crackling appears. It may happen during phone calls, FaceTime, video recordings, voice memos or when using another app that accesses the microphone. Record whether the sound is present only in recordings, only for the person on the other end of a call, or in both situations.

The iPhone has more than one microphone. The main ones are typically located near the bottom of the device, near the front-facing camera, and near the rear camera. The app and task can determine which microphone is active. For example, a speakerphone call may use a different input path than a voice memo recorded while holding the phone to your ear.

Write down whether the crackling changes with volume, speakerphone use, connected headphones, Bluetooth devices or a case on the phone. These details help separate an input problem from an output problem, because a damaged speaker can also create a crackling sound that seems microphone-related.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Run a short test in more than one app. Record a voice memo, then make a normal phone call with speakerphone off and, if available, another call or recording while using a wired or Bluetooth headset. If crackling is present only in one app, the issue may be that app's microphone access or its audio handling rather than the phone hardware.

Check whether the microphone openings are blocked or covered. A case, screen protector, dust, lint or moisture can interfere with the small openings near the bottom edge, front camera or rear camera. Avoid inserting objects into the openings. If cleaning is needed, use a dry, soft brush and keep the phone powered normally; do not use compressed air directly into the microphone holes.

Pay attention to whether the crackling follows the input device or the output device. If connected earbuds or a Bluetooth headset produce clean recordings while the built-in microphones crackle, the problem is more likely tied to the phone microphone path. If crackling is also heard through the earpiece or speaker during media playback, test playback of a known clean file. A speaker fault can be mistaken for microphone noise.

Try reversible fixes in order

1. Clean and remove obstructions

Remove the case and any screen protector attachment that covers the microphone openings. Gently brush away visible lint or dust with a dry, soft brush. Check the bottom edge near the charging port, the small opening near the front camera, and the rear camera area.

2. Check app microphone settings

In the Settings app, open Privacy and Security, then Microphone. Confirm that the affected app has microphone access enabled. If it was already enabled, you can turn it off and on again, then fully close and reopen the app. This does not delete recordings or contacts, but it may reset the app's permission state.

3. Reduce processing and environment effects

Test in a quiet room with low background noise and wind. Move away from fans, air conditioners or strong air currents. If the app offers noise suppression, voice isolation or similar audio modes, switch those settings one at a time and repeat the recording. A high input level or aggressive noise reduction can make a clean microphone sound brittle or crackly.

4. Restart the iPhone

A restart clears temporary audio routing states without removing data. After the iPhone powers back on, repeat the same test in the app where the problem first appeared. Do not treat a restart as a permanent fix if the crackling returns.

Confirm the result

Use the original failing task to verify the symptom is gone. If the problem appeared during calls, make the same type of call and ask the other person whether they still hear crackling. If it appeared in a voice memo, record for at least the same length and at a normal speaking distance, then play it back.

Compare the result against the earlier observation. A successful test means the crackling is absent under the same conditions, not just quieter or hidden by a lower input level. Avoid changing several settings at once, because that makes it harder to know which change helped.

If the problem remains

Keep notes on which apps, input devices and output devices were tested, along with what changed. If the crackling happens only during cellular calls but not during voice memos, the issue may be network-related or tied to call audio handling rather than the microphone itself.

Do not assume the microphone hardware has failed based on crackling alone. A damaged speaker, blocked opening, app setting or temporary audio routing problem can produce a similar result. If the symptom continues after cleaning, permission checks and a restart, the next appropriate step is Apple Support or an authorized repair provider, especially if the phone has been dropped or exposed to liquid.
