How to Fix Missing or Nonworking iPhone Camera Permissions

If an iPhone camera permission is missing or not working, follow these practical checks to restore camera access in apps and browser-based tools.

Identify the symptom and environment

First, record where the camera fails. Note the iPhone model, the installed version of iOS, and the app or browser where the problem appears. Also note whether the issue happens only in one app, only in video calls, only in a web-based camera test, or in every app that uses the camera.

Isolate where the fault occurs

Open a built-in app such as Camera and check whether the front and rear cameras work there. A working built-in camera suggests the hardware is functioning and the problem is more likely app-specific or permission-related. If another third-party camera app also cannot access the camera, the issue may be in the system-level camera permission or a system restriction.

For browser use, test the same page in another browser if one is installed. A camera page may fail in one browser because of that browser's site permission while still working elsewhere.

Try reversible fixes in order

In the Settings app, open Privacy and Security, then Camera. Look for the affected app in the list and confirm that its switch is on. If the app is not listed, the app may not have requested camera access yet. Open the app and try the camera feature again.

If the camera permission is already on, turn the app's camera permission off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. After changing the setting, close the app completely and reopen it.

In a conversation app, check whether the call is set to use the selected camera. If available in the app's call controls, switch between the front camera and the rear camera to see whether one camera starts in the call.

If the issue occurs in a browser, use the address bar's site controls to check the camera permission for that website. Set it to allow, then reload the page and grant permission again if prompted.

Confirm the result

Return to the original app or page where the camera failed and open its camera feature again. Confirm that the preview appears and the permission prompt no longer blocks access. If the task involved a call or recording, run a short test with the same app.

If the problem remains

Keep notes about what you tested: the affected app, the iOS version, whether the built-in Camera app works, and which permission settings were already enabled. This information helps support or repair staff. Contact Apple Support or an authorized repair provider if the built-in Camera app also fails or if the camera permission switches are unavailable or grayed out.
