USB-C to HDMI Adapter Not Working on an iPad
Practical checks for an iPad USB-C to HDMI adapter that shows no picture, drops out, or is not recognized, including connection order, power, and display settings.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by noting exactly what happens when the adapter is connected to the iPad and an HDMI display. The failure may be a black screen, a message that the accessory is not supported, intermittent picture, or video that appears only while an app is open. Record the iPad model, the version of iPadOS, the display or TV input used, and the app playing the content. This matters because USB-C iPads handle external video differently depending on the model and software version.
Also note whether the issue occurs immediately after connecting, only with copy-protected video, only in one app, or after the iPad wakes from sleep. If the adapter has a power input, note whether a charger is attached and whether the iPad shows that it is charging.
Isolate where the fault occurs
The problem can be in the adapter, the cable, the HDMI input, the display, the iPad port, or the app. Test the simplest parts first. Use a different HDMI cable if possible, and plug the existing setup into another HDMI input on the same display. If the display works with another HDMI source, the screen and input are probably fine.
Next, check whether another USB-C device can send video through the adapter to the same display. This helps separate an adapter fault from an iPad-specific behavior. If no second device is available, connect the adapter while watching the iPad screen for a charging indicator or accessory prompt, but do not treat the absence of a prompt alone as proof that the adapter is damaged.
Try reversible fixes in order
Begin with connection order and power. Disconnect the adapter from both the iPad and the display, then connect the HDMI cable to the adapter and display first. After that, plug the adapter into the iPad. For adapters with a USB-C power input, connect a charger to that input after the video connection is recognized. Some adapters may not output video unless power is supplied, so try the setup with and without the charger.
Check the HDMI display input. Use the display remote to confirm that the selected input matches the port where the cable is connected. If the display has an information or signal status option, use it to see whether a signal is detected.
On the iPad, open the app that contains the content and start playback before connecting the display, then reconnect the adapter while the content is playing. Apps can change output behavior when an external display becomes available, so this avoids relying only on the Home Screen.
Restart the iPad and try again. A restart clears temporary accessory state without deleting data. Also check for an iPadOS software update if the issue appears after an update or on a newer iPad, but only after the physical checks above.
Confirm the result
The original symptom is resolved when the display stays on the selected HDMI input and shows the expected picture or screen mirroring without disconnecting. Test the original content or app that failed, not only a different app. If the picture appears only when the adapter is held at a certain angle or after wiggling the connector, the connection remains unreliable and needs further attention.
If the problem remains
Keep notes on which combinations worked and which failed: adapter alone, adapter with power, another HDMI cable, another input, and another USB-C device. If the same adapter fails with more than one source or display, support for that adapter is the next step. If the iPad works with another video adapter but not this one, the adapter may be incompatible or faulty. If no adapter produces reliable video from the iPad, contact Apple support and report the iPad model and iPadOS version.
