iPad Screen Recording Quality and Resolution Settings

Practical tips for checking and using iPad screen recording quality and resolution settings before saving or sharing a video.

Before you start

iPad screen recording is created locally on the device and saved to the Photos app. The recording captures the current screen output, including supported app audio, device sounds you choose to enable, and microphone audio when you turn that option on. There is no separate screen recording app to install; the control is part of iPadOS.

The final resolution depends mainly on the display resolution of the iPad model and the orientation used while recording. Older and newer iPads have different native screen sizes, so a recording made on one model may not match the file dimensions from another. Changing display zoom or using a lower-resolution external display can also affect what is captured.

Step-by-step instructions

Add the screen recording control to Control Center before the first use. This is reversible and does not change the recording itself.

  • Open Settings, then choose Control Center.
  • Tap the Add button next to Screen Recording if it is not already in the active controls list.
  • Close Settings.

For most screen recording, start from Control Center and keep the device in the orientation you want to capture.

  • Open Control Center. On iPads with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner. On iPads with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom edge.
  • Tap the Screen Recording button. A short countdown may appear before recording begins.
  • Do the actions you want to record.
  • Open Control Center again and tap the Screen Recording button, or tap the red status indicator at the top of the screen, to stop.
  • Find the saved clip in Photos.

To record microphone sound at the same time, open Control Center and touch and hold the Screen Recording button before tapping it. The screen that appears includes a Microphone option that can be switched on or off. The setting you leave there is used for the current recording session.

Check the output

After the recording finishes, open Photos and select the new clip. Swipe up or open the information view to see the video details, including frame rate and resolution. If the details do not appear, the recording may still be processing.

The file should include what was visible during the session, but the captured area may differ from the full display because system interface elements are not always included. Orientation changes made during recording can also affect the final dimensions. Play the clip before sharing it to confirm that the visible area and orientation are what you expected.

Common problems and next steps

If the Screen Recording button is missing from Control Center, return to Settings and Control Center to add it. If the button is present but grayed out, check whether another recording is already active or whether restrictions are blocking screen capture.

A recording may show a smaller file size or different resolution than expected when the device is in Low Power Mode, when storage is almost full, or when protected video content prevents normal capture. Apple does not expose a manual quality selector for built-in screen recording, so the practical control is to record on the model and orientation you want to match the output.
