MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Can You Pause Screen Recording on iPad?

Learn how to pause and resume an iPad screen recording, where the control appears, and what to check when the pause button is missing.

Before you start

Screen recording on iPad is a built-in Control Center feature that records what happens on your display. The recording is processed locally on the device, so you do not need an internet connection or a separate service to use it. Pausing is also controlled on the iPad itself.

Before you try to pause, make sure Screen Recording has been added to Control Center. Open Settings, choose Control Center, and check that Screen Recording appears under Included Controls. If it is not there, add it from the More Controls list.

Step-by-step instructions

To pause and resume an iPad screen recording:

  • 1. Begin a recording by opening Control Center and tapping the Screen Recording button.
  • 2. Wait for the three-second countdown to finish and the recording indicator to appear.
  • 3. Open Control Center again while recording.
  • 4. Tap the Screen Recording button once to pause.
  • 5. Tap the same button again when you want to resume.
  • 6. To stop the recording completely, tap the red status indicator or open Control Center and stop the recording from there.

The pause action does not create a new file. Paused sections simply remain part of the same recording, with no separate timeline button for jumping between recorded segments.

On newer iPadOS versions, the Screen Recording control in Control Center can show different states. A white or highlighted button generally means recording is active, while a paused state may show a different appearance. The exact icon can vary by iPadOS version.

Check the output

After you stop the recording, the video is saved to the Photos app. Open the video to confirm that playback continues through the point where you paused and does not stop or split into another recording.

The saved file is a screen recording in the device's standard video format. It captures the display and, if enabled, microphone sound. A paused section simply contains no new screen changes during that time.

Common problems and next steps

If you do not see a pause option when you open Control Center, your iPadOS version may not support pausing the way you expect. On supported versions, tapping the Screen Recording control toggles between record, pause, and resume states. Check for an iPadOS software update if the option is missing.

If the recording indicator disappears unexpectedly, the recording may have stopped rather than paused. This can happen if you leave Control Center after tapping the wrong control. Start a short test recording and verify that the file appears in Photos before recording anything important.

When microphone audio is enabled, sounds continue to be captured according to the device's current microphone settings. If you want to exclude audio, turn off the microphone option before starting the recording.

If the video saves but includes unwanted content, you can trim it in the Photos app. Trim edits are separate from pausing: pausing controls what is captured, while trimming removes parts of the saved file after recording.
