How to Fix Screen Recording Not Working or Stopping on iPad
Practical steps for when iPad screen recording is not working, unavailable, or stops unexpectedly, including Control Center, permissions, storage, and app checks.
Identify the symptom and environment
Start by noting the exact iPad behavior. A recording may fail to start, the Screen Recording button may be missing from Control Center, the recording may stop after a few seconds, or the saved video may have no audio. Check the iPad model, iPadOS version, available storage, and whether the issue happens in one app or in every app. Also note whether the red recording indicator appears in the status bar. These details help you try the right fix instead of changing unrelated settings.
Isolate where the fault occurs
Test screen recording on the Home Screen and then inside a second app. If recording works on the Home Screen but stops in one app, that app may block recording or restrict its content. If the recording is unavailable everywhere, the problem is more likely a Control Center setting, Screen Time restriction, or low storage. When audio is missing, try recording with the microphone on and then off to see whether the problem is tied to microphone input.
Try reversible fixes in order
Check Control Center setup first. Open Settings, tap Control Center, and make sure Screen Recording appears under Included Controls. If it is under More Controls, tap its add button. If the control is already present, remove it and add it again only after first confirming that this does not affect other Control Center shortcuts you use.
Next, check Screen Time. Open Settings, tap Screen Time, then Content & Privacy Restrictions. If restrictions are enabled, look under Content Restrictions or Allowed Apps for settings that could affect screen capture. The exact path can vary by iPadOS version, so look for Screen Recording or screen capture options rather than relying on a single universal label.
Confirm that storage is not full. Open Settings, tap General, then iPad Storage. If available space is very low, recording may fail or stop. Remove only files or apps you no longer need, or move large recordings to another destination before testing again.
Restart the iPad. On most models, press and hold the top button and a volume button until the power-off slider appears, then drag the slider. Wait a few seconds and turn the iPad back on. A restart clears temporary issues without deleting data.
If recordings stop in a specific app, check whether the app uses protected video or flags its screen as private. Some streaming or banking apps prevent capture. In that case, screen recording may be working correctly but the app is not available for recording.
Confirm the result
After each change, start a short test recording from Control Center. Wait for the recording indicator, let the recording run for about 15 seconds, then stop it and open the saved video in Photos. Check that the video plays and that the expected screen activity was captured. If the recording now completes without stopping, the original symptom is resolved. Do not use an unsupported third-party driver download or disable security features as part of this check.
If the problem remains
Keep a short note of what you observed: which iPadOS version is installed, how much storage is free, whether the button is present in Control Center, and whether the recording fails everywhere or only in one app. This information is useful if you contact support. A failing recording is not by itself proof of hardware damage, but if the problem persists after the reversible fixes and appears across apps, contact Apple support or an authorized service provider. If the device is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator whether a restriction is blocking screen recording.
