MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

iPad screen recording maximum length

Find out how long an iPad screen recording can run, what limits apply, and how to check the output file in Photos.

Before you start

Screen recording on an iPad is done locally with the built-in Control Center recorder and saves the result as a video file in the Photos app. There is no fixed timer that stops a recording at a specific number of minutes. The actual length is usually constrained by available storage, battery power, and what is happening on the device, not by a system countdown.

Apple does not publish a universal maximum duration for iPad screen recordings. The limit can therefore differ between models and available capacity. Before starting a long recording, confirm the iPad has enough free space and is connected to power, or expect the recording to stop if storage runs out or the device powers down.

Step-by-step instructions

The Screen Recording button is part of Control Center. If it has not been added, open Settings, go to Control Center, and add Screen Recording under More Controls.

Start a screen recording

  • Open Control Center by swiping down from the upper-right corner of the screen, or up from the bottom on models with a Home button.
  • Tap the Screen Recording button, which looks like a circle inside a ring.
  • A three-second countdown appears by default.
  • Record the screen for as long as needed.
  • Tap the red status indicator at the top of the screen, then tap Stop to finish.

Record without audio

The recorder captures the screen only by default. To include sound from the microphone, touch and hold the Screen Recording button in Control Center, tap the Microphone button so it turns on, then tap Start Recording. This setting affects what is captured, not how long the video can be.

Check the output

The saved recording appears in the Photos app under Screen Recordings in the Albums tab. Open the video to confirm its duration, playback, and whether audio was included when microphone recording was enabled. If the file is very long, it can take a moment to appear after you stop recording.

Duration is limited by device conditions rather than a guaranteed time value. If the recording ends early, check the available storage in Settings under General and iPhone Storage, even though the wording may differ slightly by iPad version. A low-battery shutdown can also leave a shorter clip.

Common problems and next steps

If the recording stops unexpectedly, first confirm there is still free space and the battery had not reached a critical level. Restarting the iPad can also help if the Screen Recording control does not respond.

For very long sessions, divide the capture into shorter recordings so one interruption does not remove the entire result. After each segment is visible in Photos, start the next part. This keeps the files more manageable and reduces the effect of any storage or power interruption.

If the saved video is present but has no sound, the microphone may have been off when the recording started. Stop the current attempt and start a new one after touching and holding the Screen Recording button and confirming the microphone is enabled.
