How to Find a Missing Screen Recording Button on iPad

Step-by-step help for finding and restoring a missing screen recording button on iPad, adding it to Control Center, and checking recorded video output.

Before you start

Screen recording on iPad is handled locally by iPadOS and saves the finished clip to the Photos app. The recording control is part of Control Center, so the button may be missing because the Screen Recording control was removed or has not been added yet. Check that the iPad is running a version of iPadOS that includes screen recording before making changes.

Step-by-step instructions

Use these steps when the screen recording button is not visible in Control Center. The process is reversible and does not delete existing recordings.

Open Control Center settings

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap Control Center.
  • Look at the Included Controls list for Screen Recording.
  • If Screen Recording is not listed, continue to the next step.

Add the Screen Recording control

  • In Control Center settings, scroll to the More Controls section.
  • Find Screen Recording.
  • Tap the green plus button next to Screen Recording.
  • Return to the Home Screen and open Control Center to confirm the button is now visible.

Record a clip

  • Open Control Center from the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Tap the Screen Recording button.
  • Wait for the three-second countdown to finish.
  • Perform the actions you want to record.
  • Open Control Center and tap the Screen Recording button again, or tap the red status bar, to stop recording.
  • Open Photos to view the saved video.

Check the output

After recording, go to the Photos app and look under Library or Recents. If the clip is present, playback should show the captured screen and any audio selected when the recording began. Video quality depends on the iPad screen resolution, available storage and recording settings, not on a separate encoding or export step.

Common problems and next steps

If the button is still missing after adding it, check whether iPadOS restricts or hides the control through a configuration profile or Screen Time setting. Some managed or supervised devices may remove screen recording controls, in which case an administrator must allow them. If the recording does not appear in Photos, confirm that enough storage is available and look in the Recently Deleted album in case the clip was removed.

If recordings stop unexpectedly or fail to save, restart the iPad and try a shorter clip. For sensitive content, be careful about sharing the screen while notifications or password fields are visible, because the recording captures everything shown on the display.
