How to Install qpwgraph on Ubuntu

Step-by-step instructions for installing qpwgraph on Ubuntu, checking the PipeWire graph, and fixing common package or display problems.

Before you start

qpwgraph provides a graphical view of PipeWire connections such as camera, microphone, speaker, and recording application ports. On Ubuntu it runs locally and does not need a background service of its own, but it is useful only when PipeWire is installed and active. Desktop editions of Ubuntu normally include PipeWire for audio; some builds may still rely on PulseAudio for part of the sound stack.

You need an Ubuntu release that provides the qpwgraph package, either in the default repositories or through an available third-party package source. Check the package name before installing because version availability can differ between Ubuntu releases. A graphical desktop session is required for the application window to open.

Step-by-step instructions

Use the terminal method first because it confirms the package source and reports problems clearly.

1. Refresh the package index

sudo apt update

Refreshing the index ensures that apt sees the currently available version for your Ubuntu release. If qpwgraph is not in your configured repositories, the following install step will report that the package cannot be located.

2. Install qpwgraph

sudo apt install qpwgraph

If the package cannot be found, the best correction depends on the Ubuntu version. Newer releases may include qpwgraph directly, while older ones may need a third-party repository or a Flatpak. Flatpak is an alternative only where Flatpak support is already configured; adding an external package source should match the vendor instructions for your exact Ubuntu release.

3. Start qpwgraph

qpwgraph

The window opens when a graphical session is available. No configuration is required for a basic view: qpwgraph reads the current PipeWire graph after startup. Close the window to exit; the tool does not need to remain open for audio or video routing already in use.

4. Reversible package removal

sudo apt remove qpwgraph

Removal should not disable PipeWire itself, but it does remove the graphical router. If you installed through Flatpak or a third-party repository, use the matching removal method for that source.

Check the output

After the window opens, verify that qpwgraph is reading the active graph by comparing the displayed ports with a currently running application. Open a video call or media player, then look for its ports in qpwgraph. The view may be empty if no PipeWire clients are active at that moment.

If the expected camera or microphone device does not appear, qpwgraph cannot confirm that the device is usable. It only exposes what PipeWire reports. A missing device is a PipeWire or device-level issue rather than evidence that qpwgraph is installed incorrectly.

Common problems and next steps

If apt reports that qpwgraph has no installation candidate, your configured sources for that Ubuntu release do not provide it. Confirm the package name and search the exact Ubuntu release documentation, then use the recommended source for that release. Do not copy repository commands intended for a different version.

If qpwgraph starts but remains blank, confirm that PipeWire is running and restart the application after launching the source you want to inspect. The graph is a live view, not a fixed list of all devices ever connected. A camera that is in use by the browser may also be unavailable to another client because PipeWire applications request access separately.

If the application cannot open because no display is available, run it from within a desktop session rather than through a remote shell without display forwarding. qpwgraph is a graphical tool and does not provide a terminal-only mode for viewing connections.
