How to Install qpwgraph on Fedora

Step-by-step instructions for installing qpwgraph on Fedora, covering the PipeWire prerequisite, graphical package installation, and how to verify the application launches correctly.

Before you start

qpwgraph is a PipeWire graph manager with a Qt interface. It lets you view and adjust connections between audio and video sources and sinks on your system. On Fedora, it depends on PipeWire, so a system using PipeWire for audio and video will already have the main runtime component available. The installation steps are local to your machine: no separate background service or extra daemon is required after the package is installed.

You need either a graphical desktop with the Software application, or a terminal with sudo access for the current user. The packaged release available in the Fedora repositories may be an older version than the one distributed by the upstream project. If you rely on newer features, consider the availability of another source before proceeding, but do not add third-party repositories unless you understand their trust requirements.

Step-by-step instructions

Install using the Software application

  • Open the Software application from your desktop menu.
  • Select the search field and type qpwgraph.
  • Choose the qpwgraph entry from the results.
  • Select Install and wait for the operation to finish.

Install using the terminal with dnf

  • Open a terminal window.
  • Refresh package metadata by running: sudo dnf makecache
  • Install the package by running: sudo dnf install qpwgraph
  • Confirm the installation prompt when asked.

The dnf method installs the same Fedora package as the graphical method. Reversing the change is also straightforward: either remove qpwgraph in Software, or use sudo dnf remove qpwgraph in a terminal. Removing it does not remove PipeWire itself.

Check the output

After installation, start qpwgraph from the desktop application menu or by running qpwgraph in a terminal. The main window should open with a graph area and a set of filter controls for audio and video ports. The connection graph may appear empty if no PipeWire sessions are active; this is normal until an application or camera creates a stream.

To confirm the package is installed from the terminal, run rpm -q qpwgraph. The command will print the package name and version if installation succeeded. Do not treat the absence of visible devices as an installation failure: qpwgraph only displays nodes advertised by running PipeWire clients.

Common problems and next steps

If the qpwgraph package is not found, update your package lists first and make sure your Fedora version still carries the package. A connection to the configured Fedora repositories is required for both the graphical and terminal methods.

If the application opens but the graph is empty while a camera or media player is active, start the media application before qpwgraph, or click the refresh control in qpwgraph to request an updated view. For an audio input such as a microphone, confirm that the application using the microphone is running and has been granted permission.

Version differences can affect the exact layout of controls, but the core behavior remains the same: nodes represent clients, and connections represent audio or video routes. If a route was changed accidentally, remove the unwanted connection in qpwgraph rather than reinstalling the package.
