How to Install pavucontrol on Linux
Step-by-step instructions for installing pavucontrol on Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, Debian, Mint and other Linux distributions, plus how to check audio devices and fix common issues.
Before you start
pavucontrol is a graphical volume control for PulseAudio and PipeWire systems that use the PulseAudio compatibility layer. The tool runs locally on the machine where your audio devices are connected, so you do not need a remote service or extra daemon to launch it. You will need an installed desktop environment because pavucontrol opens as a GUI window. Check that your system uses PulseAudio or PipeWire with PulseAudio support; most current Linux desktop installations do, but minimal server images may not include the required audio stack.
Step-by-step instructions
The package name is pavucontrol on all major distributions. Use your package manager to install it from the official repositories. After installation, start it from the application menu or by typing pavucontrol in a terminal.
Ubuntu and Debian
Open a terminal and run these two commands. The first refreshes the package list; the second installs pavucontrol.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install pavucontrol
Linux Mint
Linux Mint uses the same APT package manager as Ubuntu. Open a terminal and run the following:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install pavucontrol
Arch Linux and Manjaro
On Arch-based systems, install pavucontrol from the extra repository using pacman. If the package database has not been synchronized recently, update it first with pacman -Sy.
sudo pacman -S pavucontrol
Fedora
Use dnf on Fedora. DNF refreshes repository metadata as needed during installation, so a separate update command is not required.
sudo dnf install pavucontrol
NixOS
On NixOS, add pavucontrol to your system packages in configuration.nix and rebuild. You can also start it ad hoc with nix-shell or nix run for a temporary environment.
environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [ pavucontrol ];
Gentoo
On Gentoo, pavucontrol is available through Portage. The package may be masked by keyword on stable systems, so you may need to accept the testing keyword for your architecture.
sudo emerge --ask media-sound/pavucontrol
Raspberry Pi OS
Raspberry Pi OS is based on Debian and supports the same APT commands. Run:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install pavucontrol
Check the output
Launch pavucontrol from the application menu or by running pavucontrol in a terminal. The window should open with tabs for playback, recording, output devices, input devices and configuration. Connect a microphone or webcam and speak or play audio to see activity on the level meters. The meters respond to the selected device and are not a recording test; they show whether PulseAudio or the PipeWire PulseAudio layer is receiving an audio signal.
Quality and format controls are limited. pavucontrol can adjust volume, mute state and port selection, but it does not change sample rate, bit depth or channel mapping. Those settings belong to the underlying sound server configuration files. pavucontrol also does not record or export audio, so it cannot verify the quality of a saved file.
Common problems and next steps
If your shell reports pavucontrol command not found, the package is not installed or the system PATH does not include the directory where desktop applications are placed. Install the package with the command for your distribution, then close and reopen the terminal before trying again.
When the window does not open and the terminal shows a connection error, the audio server is not running or the D-Bus session is unavailable. pavucontrol needs a working PulseAudio-compatible sound server. Start your desktop session normally rather than from a remote shell, and check whether other audio applications can play sound. On PipeWire systems, the package pipewire-pulse or pipewire-pulseaudio equivalent must be active for PulseAudio tools to connect.
If a connected camera or microphone does not appear, click the input devices tab and confirm the port selection is set to the hardware connector you are using. Some USB audio devices expose multiple ports, such as analog input and digital input. A device listed as unplugged is recognized by the sound server but reports no active signal or connection.
Changes in pavucontrol apply immediately to the running session and are generally reversible by moving a slider back or selecting the previous port. To remove the tool later, use the same package manager with a remove or uninstall command; removing pavucontrol does not remove the underlying PulseAudio or PipeWire software.
