How to Install an MTP Driver on a Dell Windows PC

Fix a phone, camera or media player that won't show up on your Dell laptop or desktop by installing the built-in Windows MTP driver, step by step.

MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) lets Windows browse and copy files on phones, some cameras, audio recorders and media players without mounting them as a drive. Dell does not normally ship a separate MTP driver. Windows includes a generic MTP class driver, and most connection problems on Dell PCs are fixed by making Windows use that driver for your device.

Before you start

  • A USB cable that carries data, not just power. Charge-only cables are a common cause of devices that never appear.
  • The device unlocked, with its screen on, while you connect it.
  • A Windows account with administrator rights, because changing a driver requires them.
  • A USB port directly on the Dell PC. Docks, monitor hubs and front-panel extensions can work, but they add another point of failure while you troubleshoot.
  • On Windows N or KN editions, the Media Feature Pack. MTP depends on media components that these editions leave out, and you can add them from Optional features in Settings.

Installing the built-in driver runs entirely on the PC and does not need an online service. Windows Update or Dell's update tools may download chipset or USB drivers if you use them later in troubleshooting. Files you copy over MTP go wherever you save them on the PC, so check that location yourself if the files are private.

Step-by-step instructions

  • 1. Connect the device to the Dell PC and unlock it.
  • 2. On the device, set the USB mode to file transfer. On Android phones this setting is in the USB notification or USB preferences, and the label varies by manufacturer (for example File transfer or MTP). On cameras and recorders, look for a USB connection or PC mode setting in the device menu. Some cameras offer only PTP, which supports photo import rather than full file browsing.
  • 3. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  • 4. Find the device. It is usually under Portable Devices, Other devices or Universal Serial Bus devices. A yellow warning icon or a generic name such as MTP or the phone model points to a missing or wrong driver.
  • 5. Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
  • 6. Choose Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • 7. If Windows asks for a device type, choose Portable Devices.
  • 8. Select MTP USB Device or USB MTP Device (the exact wording depends on the Windows version) and click Next. Accept any warning about compatibility.
  • 9. Disconnect the device and reconnect it.

If no MTP entry appears in the list, the driver package may not be registered. Open the folder C:\Windows\INF in File Explorer, find wpdmtp.inf, right-click it and choose Install. On Windows 11 you may need to choose Show more options first. Then repeat steps 5 to 9.

These changes can be undone. In Device Manager, open the device's Properties, go to the Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if it is available. You can also choose Uninstall device and reconnect the hardware so Windows detects it again from scratch.

Check the output

  • In Device Manager, the device appears under Portable Devices without a warning icon, and its Properties show that the device is working properly.
  • In File Explorer, the device appears under This PC as a named device. It does not get a drive letter, which is normal for MTP.
  • Opening the device shows its internal storage or memory card folders. If the folders are empty, unlock the device and accept any access prompt on its screen.
  • Copy one small file from the device to the PC and one from the PC to the device, then open both copies to confirm they transferred.

MTP has some limits even when the driver works. Some programs cannot open or edit files directly on an MTP device, so copy recordings, photos or videos to a local folder before editing them. Transfers of many small files can be slow, and some devices limit which folders they expose.

Common problems and next steps

The device charges but never appears in Device Manager: try another data cable and another USB port directly on the PC, and check the USB mode again on the device. If nothing appears with any cable, the issue is probably the port, the cable or the device rather than the MTP driver.

The MTP driver installs but the device shows an error or disappears: uninstall the device in Device Manager, restart the PC and reconnect. If that does not help, update the Dell PC's chipset and USB or Thunderbolt drivers and its BIOS. Use the Dell support site for your service tag, or Dell's own update utility if it is installed.

The device works on another PC but not on the Dell: compare the USB mode setting on the device and the Windows edition on each PC. An N edition without the Media Feature Pack is a frequent reason that only one computer detects the device.

An iPhone or iPad does not show an MTP option: Apple devices do not use the Windows MTP driver, so these steps do not apply to them. Photo access on Windows relies on Apple's own device driver instead.

A phone manufacturer's USB driver is listed for download: for plain file transfer the built-in Windows driver is normally enough. Vendor drivers are usually needed only for developer tools or firmware utilities, so install one only if the manufacturer's instructions for your device call for it.
