How to Install a Motorola MTP Driver in Windows

Get Windows to recognize your Motorola phone for file transfer: switch the USB mode, install the MTP driver in Device Manager, and fix common driver errors.

MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) lets Windows browse and copy the photos, videos and audio recordings stored on a Motorola Android phone over USB. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a generic MTP driver, so most Motorola phones need no separate download. When the phone does not appear in File Explorer, or Device Manager shows an MTP device with a warning icon, the fixes below show how to install or reinstall the driver.

Before you start

Driver installation runs locally on your PC and does not depend on an online service. Internet access is only needed if Windows Update has to fetch a driver or if you download Motorola's USB driver package. Before you begin, gather the following:

  • A USB cable that supports data. Some cables only carry power and will charge the phone without ever showing it to Windows.
  • Your phone, unlocked, with its screen on during the first connection.
  • A Windows account with administrator rights, because installing or changing drivers requires them.
  • Your Windows edition. N and KN editions ship without the media components that MTP relies on, so they need the Media Feature Pack first.
  • Motorola's official USB driver package, only if the generic driver does not work. Download it only from Motorola's official support pages and confirm it lists your phone and Windows version, since availability can change.

Once file transfer is enabled, the computer can read and change the phone's shared storage, including camera photos and videos. Only enable it on a computer you trust, and switch the phone back to charging-only mode when you finish.

Step-by-step instructions

Enable file transfer on the phone

  • Connect the phone directly to a USB port on the computer. Avoid hubs and front-panel ports on the first try.
  • Unlock the phone and swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notifications.
  • Tap the USB notification. It usually says the device is charging via USB.
  • Select File transfer. Depending on the Android version, this may be labeled Transfer files or File transfer / Android Auto.
  • If the phone asks whether to allow access to its data, allow it.
  • On the PC, open File Explorer and look under This PC for your phone's model name.

Android defaults to charging only on each new connection, so this step often has to be repeated. If the phone appears in File Explorer at this point, Windows has already installed the MTP driver and you can skip to the checks below.

Install the MTP driver in Device Manager

  • Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
  • With the phone connected in file transfer mode, find it under Portable Devices, Other devices or Universal Serial Bus devices. It may appear as the phone model, MTP, or an unknown device with a yellow warning icon.
  • Right-click the entry and choose Update driver.
  • Choose Browse my computer for drivers, then Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • If a device type list appears, choose Portable Devices.
  • Select MTP USB Device and click Next. If a warning appears about compatibility, confirm only if you are sure you selected the phone's entry.
  • Wait for the confirmation message, then unplug and reconnect the phone, selecting File transfer again.

This change is reversible. If the device stops working afterwards, open its Properties in Device Manager and use Roll Back Driver on the Driver tab. You can also choose Uninstall device, then reconnect the phone so Windows detects it again.

Use Motorola's USB driver package if needed

If the generic driver is not offered or the phone still shows as an unknown device, install Motorola's USB driver package from its official support site. Disconnect the phone first, run the installer, restart the PC if prompted, and reconnect the phone in file transfer mode. The package can also cover other connection modes, such as the ADB interface used for developer tools.

Windows edition differences

On Windows 10 or Windows 11 N editions, install the Media Feature Pack before updating the driver. On recent versions, it is added through Optional features in Settings. Restart afterwards, then repeat the Device Manager steps. On standard editions, the steps are essentially the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11. The main visible difference is that Windows 11 hides some right-click commands behind Show more options.

Check the output

  • In Device Manager, the phone should be listed under Portable Devices without a warning icon. The Driver tab in its Properties shows which driver is in use.
  • In File Explorer, the phone should appear under This PC. Opening it should show the phone's internal shared storage.
  • Camera photos and videos are normally in the DCIM folder. Folder names for other apps vary by app and phone.
  • Copy one small file from the phone to the PC and one from the PC to the phone, then open both copies to confirm the transfer works in each direction.

Keep MTP's limitations in mind when judging the result. The phone does not get a drive letter, so some programs cannot open files from it directly. In that case, copy the files to a local folder first. Newly created files may not appear until the phone indexes them, and reconnecting usually refreshes the list. If the camera saves in HEIF or HEVC format, Windows may need additional codecs to preview those files even though copying works.

Common problems and next steps

The phone only charges and never appears. Confirm File transfer is selected after every connection, then try a different data-capable cable and another USB port directly on the computer. Restart both the phone and the PC before changing drivers further.

The MTP USB Device driver fails to install. Open the Windows INF folder, find wpdmtp.inf, right-click it and choose Install, then repeat the Device Manager update. On N editions, install the Media Feature Pack first. Also check Windows Update, including its optional driver updates, for a pending device driver.

Device Manager shows an error code such as Code 28 (drivers not installed). Uninstall the device, disconnect the phone, install Motorola's USB driver package, and reconnect in file transfer mode.

The phone appears but its storage is empty. Unlock the screen and accept any access prompt on the phone. Then disconnect, reconnect and reopen the phone in File Explorer.

The phone shows only as an ADB interface. This entry belongs to USB debugging rather than file transfer. Install Motorola's USB driver package for the ADB entry, and make sure File transfer is selected so the MTP entry also appears.

If none of these steps help, test the phone on another Windows PC. If it is recognized there, the problem lies with the first computer's drivers or ports. If it fails everywhere, the cause is more likely the phone's USB port or settings, and Motorola support is the next step.
