MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

Download and install Logitech webcam software

Most Logitech webcams work on a Mac without a driver. Learn when Logitech's optional software is worth installing and how to make sure the webcam microphone is the active input.

The short answer

On a Mac, most current Logitech webcams don't need a driver or any downloaded software to work. Popular models such as the C920 family and the Brio range use the standard USB video class (UVC) and USB audio class, so macOS should recognise both the camera and its built-in microphone when you plug it in. Logitech's software is optional. It mainly adds camera controls like zoom, framing, exposure and firmware updates. It isn't needed for the microphone to capture speech. The main exception to check is an older or unusual model. In that case, look up your exact model name on Logitech's support pages to confirm current macOS support.

Setting up the webcam and its microphone on macOS

  • 1. Connect the webcam directly to a USB port on the Mac, or to a powered hub. Use an adapter if your Mac only has USB-C ports and the webcam cable is USB-A.
  • 2. Open System Settings, go to Sound, then select the Input tab. The webcam should appear in the list, usually under its model name.
  • 3. Select the webcam as the input and speak at your normal volume. The input level meter should move. If an input volume slider is available, adjust it so that ordinary speech registers clearly without constantly reaching the top of the meter.
  • 4. Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and check both Camera and Microphone. Allow access for each app you plan to use, such as your browser or conferencing app.
  • 5. In the conferencing or recording app, open its audio settings and choose the webcam as the microphone. Many apps keep their own device choice, separate from the system default.
  • 6. If the app was already open when you connected the webcam, quit it and reopen it so that it detects the new devices.

When to install Logitech's software, and which app

Install Logitech software if you want camera adjustments beyond what your conferencing app offers, or if Logitech recommends a firmware update for your model. Logitech has changed its webcam apps over time, so which app applies depends on the model:

  • Logi Tune: Logitech's general app for many current business and everyday webcams, including Brio and C920-series models.
  • Logi Options+: listed by Logitech for the MX Brio, alongside its MX keyboards and mice.
  • Logitech G HUB: used for some streaming-oriented and gaming-branded cameras.
  • Older apps such as Logitech Capture and Camera Settings: these are legacy tools. Check that they still support your version of macOS before you rely on them.

Because these assignments change, the safest step is to search Logitech's support site for your exact model, whether that's a Brio 100, Brio 101, C920s or 4K Pro. Download the macOS installer listed for that model. Before installing, confirm that it supports your macOS version and, on newer Macs, Apple silicon.

What the software does and doesn't change for speech capture

Logitech's apps are built mainly around picture settings. Some versions may include microphone options for certain models, such as muting or noise reduction, but the supplied material doesn't confirm which models or app versions offer these. Treat any microphone control in Logitech software as a model-specific extra, not something to expect. In practice, three things have the most direct effect on how your voice sounds: which microphone is selected in macOS and in your conferencing app, the input level, and any noise suppression applied by the conferencing app.

If the microphone doesn't appear or picks up nothing

  • Try a different USB port or cable, and avoid unpowered hubs.
  • Check that the app is allowed under Microphone in Privacy & Security. Without this permission, the app gets no audio even if the device is connected.
  • Check the app's own audio menu. It may still be using the Mac's built-in microphone or a headset.
  • If the webcam shows in the Input list but the level meter doesn't move, disconnect it and reconnect it, or restart the Mac.
  • If it still doesn't work, check whether Logitech offers a firmware update for your model.

Limits of this guide

No measurements, test recordings or model-by-model specifications were available for this guide. It doesn't rate the voice quality of any Logitech webcam microphone, and it doesn't confirm which microphone controls each Logitech app offers for each model. For those details, check the official documentation for your specific model.
