How to Install a BLU MTP Driver in Windows

Get your BLU phone recognized for file transfer in Windows 10 and 11 by assigning the built-in MTP driver, then verify the connection and fix common errors.

BLU Android phones use MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) to exchange photos, videos, recordings and other files with a Windows PC. Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include a generic MTP driver, so getting a BLU phone working usually means making Windows use that built-in driver correctly rather than downloading a separate package. This guide walks through that process and shows how to undo it if needed.

Before you start

Everything described here runs locally on your PC. No online service or account is required, although Windows may contact Windows Update when searching for drivers if that option is enabled. Gather the following first:

  • A USB cable that carries data. Some cables only charge; if in doubt, use one that has already worked for file transfer with another phone.
  • Your BLU phone, charged and unlocked with the screen on when you connect it.
  • A Windows account with administrator rights, which is needed to change drivers.
  • Your Windows edition. Check it under Settings > System > About. Editions ending in N lack media components that MTP depends on and need the Media Feature Pack.

Driver packages intended for flashing firmware (often labeled VCOM or preloader) or for ADB debugging serve different purposes and are not required for ordinary file transfer. If BLU support offers a driver for your specific model, confirm where it comes from before installing it.

Step-by-step instructions

1. Put the phone in file transfer mode

Connect the phone, unlock it, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the USB notification. Choose File transfer or Transfer files. The exact wording varies between Android versions. Avoid PTP or Transfer photos, which exposes only camera folders, and Charging only, which disables data.

2. See how Windows detects the phone

Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager. Expand Portable devices. If your phone or MTP USB Device is listed there without a warning icon, the driver is already installed and you can go to the verification section. If the phone appears under Other devices, or shows a yellow exclamation mark under a name such as MTP or Android, continue with the next step.

3. Assign the built-in MTP driver

  • In Device Manager, right-click the phone entry and choose Update driver.
  • Select Browse my computer for drivers.
  • Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  • If Windows asks for a device type, choose Portable Devices (or Android Device if it is offered) and click Next.
  • Select MTP USB Device and click Next. If it is not visible, clear the Show compatible hardware checkbox and look for it under the standard MTP device manufacturer entry.
  • Accept any compatibility warning only if you selected MTP USB Device, then unplug and reconnect the phone.

4. Reinstall the MTP driver file if it is missing

If MTP USB Device does not appear in the list, open File Explorer, type C:\Windows\INF into the address bar and press Enter. Find wpdmtp.inf, right-click it and choose Install (on Windows 11, select Show more options first). Then repeat step 3.

5. Add the Media Feature Pack on N editions

On Windows 10 N or Windows 11 N, open Settings > Apps > Optional features, choose to add a feature, search for Media Feature Pack, install it and restart the PC. Some older Windows 10 builds distributed this pack as a separate download instead; it must match your Windows version.

How to undo the change

To reverse a driver change, open the device's Properties in Device Manager, go to the Driver tab and use Roll Back Driver if it is available. Alternatively, choose Uninstall device, leave any option to delete driver software unchecked, then reconnect the phone so Windows detects it again.

Check the output

  • Open File Explorer and select This PC. The phone should appear as a device, usually with its model name.
  • Open it and confirm you can see the internal storage and, if one is inserted, the SD card. An empty device usually means the phone is locked or not in file transfer mode.
  • Copy a small file to the phone and another back to the PC, then open both copies to confirm they transferred intact.
  • In Device Manager, the phone should be listed under Portable devices with no warning icon.

Keep MTP's limits in mind. The phone does not receive a drive letter, so some programs cannot open or edit files directly on it; copy files to the PC first. Interrupting a transfer can leave an incomplete file. Files recently created on the phone may not appear until you reconnect, because MTP relies on the phone's media index. MTP copies files unchanged and performs no conversion, so whether a photo, video or audio file plays on the PC depends on the codecs installed in Windows.

Common problems and next steps

The phone charges but does not appear on the PC

Try a different cable and connect directly to a USB port on the computer rather than through a hub. Unlock the phone, select file transfer again in the USB notification, and restart both the phone and the PC if nothing changes.

MTP USB Device shows an error or a yellow mark

Uninstall the device in Device Manager, reconnect the phone and repeat step 3. If the error persists, reinstall wpdmtp.inf as described in step 4 and, on N editions, make sure the Media Feature Pack is installed.

Only the camera folder is visible

The phone is in PTP mode. Change the USB option on the phone to file transfer; Windows should then show the full storage.

Transfers stop or the device becomes unreachable

The phone may have gone to sleep or the connection may be unstable. Keep the screen awake during long transfers, copy files in smaller batches and replace the cable if the problem repeats.

You need ADB rather than file transfer

ADB debugging uses a separate driver and requires USB debugging to be enabled in the phone's developer options. Neither is needed for MTP, and enabling them does not fix file transfer problems.

If nothing works

Connect the phone to another Windows PC. If it fails there too, the cable or the phone's USB port is the likely cause, and contacting BLU support is the sensible next step. As a temporary alternative, if your model has a memory card slot, you can move files using the card and a card reader.
