Install the ASUS IR camera driver
A practical guide to installing the ASUS IR camera driver, with notes on how it affects Windows Hello and what it does not tell you about webcam microphone capture.
Short answer
The ASUS IR camera driver is normally installed through Windows Update, ASUS Live Update, MyASUS, or the support page for your exact laptop or all-in-one model. The driver mainly supports the infrared camera used for facial recognition in Windows Hello. It does not provide the microphone driver for audio capture, so installing or updating it should not be treated as a fix for webcam microphone problems unless your system is also missing a separate audio or camera microphone driver.
Why the IR camera driver matters
An infrared camera is a secondary imaging sensor that works with near-infrared light rather than the visible-light image used in a normal webcam picture. On many ASUS laptops, the IR camera is paired with the front-facing camera module so Windows Hello can recognize your face even in dim lighting. The IR camera does not record the sound of your voice. Speech capture is handled by a microphone array that is often part of the same physical module but is exposed to Windows as a separate audio input device.
Because the camera and microphone share a housing, it is common to see one combined download package named something like "Camera driver" or "IR camera driver" for an ASUS model. That package may include firmware or driver files for both the imaging sensor and the microphone array, but this is not guaranteed. If your only symptom is that the webcam microphone is missing, silent, quiet, or noisy, the IR camera driver is not the first item to reinstall.
How to install or update the driver
Use one of these methods in order. The best choice depends on your ASUS model and whether Windows can already identify the hardware.
- Windows Update: Open Settings, then Windows Update, then check for updates. Optional driver updates may appear under Advanced options or Optional updates.
- MyASUS or ASUS Live Update: On supported models, the ASUS utility can detect the correct camera and IR camera package for your machine.
- ASUS support page: Search by the exact model name, such as the printed model number on the bottom of the laptop. Download the camera or IR camera driver listed for your installed version of Windows, extract it, and run the installer or use Device Manager to install the extracted driver.
- Device Manager: If the IR camera appears with a warning icon under Cameras or Imaging devices, right-click it, choose Update driver, then select Search automatically for drivers.
After installation, a restart is usually required. If Windows Hello is available, test it by signing out and signing back in while looking at the camera. The infrared LEDs may flash faintly red during recognition on some models.
What this means for webcam speech capture
The webcam microphone appears in Windows as an audio input device, not as an imaging device. In Device Manager, it is normally listed under Audio inputs and outputs or Sound, video and game controllers rather than under Cameras. If the microphone is not recognized, the relevant fix is usually the audio driver for the Intel, Realtek, AMD, or other audio codec on the machine, or a model-specific microphone array driver from ASUS.
When the microphone is present but performs poorly in calls, the cause is more likely to be the selected input device, Windows privacy settings, app permissions, signal processing, or physical obstruction. Installing the IR camera package may still help on some models if the combined driver also refreshes the microphone array component, but the evidence for that depends on the specific download contents for your model. Generic ASUS IR camera packages should not be assumed to improve audio.
Check the actual microphone input
Before changing drivers, confirm which input device Windows is using. In Windows sound settings, choose the input device that matches the built-in microphone array, often shown as "Microphone Array" or a model-specific name such as "Realtek Audio" or "Intel Smart Sound Technology." Speak and check whether the input level meter moves. If the wrong input is selected, a conferencing app may capture no speech even though the correct microphone is working.
If no built-in microphone appears, check Device Manager for a disabled or failing audio device, and install the appropriate audio driver for your exact ASUS model. Windows microphone privacy settings must also allow desktop apps to access the microphone, and each conferencing app must have permission to use a microphone in its own settings.
When the driver package does not resolve the issue
If the IR camera package installs successfully but Windows Hello still fails, the issue may be firmware, a disabled biometric device, Group Policy, a damaged camera module, or an unsupported Windows Hello configuration. If speech capture still fails after the correct audio and camera packages are installed, test the microphone in another app, check the input level, and consider whether the problem is the microphone array hardware rather than a driver.
The available evidence for ASUS IR camera packages does not establish that they contain a universal microphone fix. Treat the IR camera driver as a component of the facial-recognition path, and treat microphone issues as a separate audio input problem unless the model-specific driver description explicitly mentions the microphone array or audio capture.
