HP EliteBook 830 G5 webcam not working: practical fixes

Step-by-step guide to fix an HP EliteBook 830 G5 webcam that is not working, not detected, or blocked in Windows, including privacy settings, drivers, and app permissions.

What the problem usually means

On an HP EliteBook 830 G5, a webcam that is not working can mean several different things: the camera is not detected by Windows, the camera is detected but shows a black screen, an app says no camera is available, or the camera works but the microphone does not. The fix depends on which situation applies. The most common causes are a camera blocked by the physical privacy shutter or keyboard shortcut, a disabled driver, a Windows privacy setting that blocks camera access, or an app that does not have permission to use the camera.

Check the physical camera shutter and keyboard shortcut first

Many EliteBook 830 G5 configurations include a privacy shutter or a camera switch. Look at the top edge of the display near the camera lens. If a small sliding cover is closed, the camera will appear black or unavailable even when Windows detects it. Slide it open until the lens is visible.

The EliteBook 830 G5 also uses a keyboard shortcut to toggle the camera. On most units this is the F8 key, often with a camera icon. Press F8 or Fn+F8 depending on the keyboard setting, then reopen the camera app. If you see a message that the camera is off, this shortcut is the likely cause.

Check whether Windows detects the camera

Open Device Manager and expand the Cameras or Imaging devices category. If you see an HP camera or similar entry, Windows is detecting the device. If the entry has a yellow warning triangle, the driver or device has a problem. If no camera category appears, look under Other devices for an unknown device, or expand Universal Serial Bus devices and look for a camera-related entry.

If the camera is missing entirely, it may be disabled in the BIOS or UEFI. Restart the laptop and press F10 repeatedly to enter the HP BIOS setup. Look for a setting called Built-in Camera, Integrated Camera, or Webcam. If it is disabled, enable it, save changes, and restart Windows.

Enable or reinstall the camera driver

In Device Manager, right-click the camera and choose Enable device if it is disabled. If it is already enabled but not working, select Uninstall device. Do not select the option to delete the driver unless you are also removing damaged driver files. Restart the laptop and let Windows reinstall the built-in driver automatically.

You can also right-click the camera, choose Update driver, and then Search automatically for drivers. If Windows does not find a newer driver, check HP Support Assistant or HP Image Assistant for an HP-provided camera driver for the EliteBook 830 G5. Do not install a generic camera driver from an unknown source.

Allow camera access in Windows privacy settings

Windows can block camera access even when the hardware is working. Open Settings, go to Privacy, and select Camera. Make sure Camera access for this device is on, Allow apps to access your camera is on, and the specific app you are using is enabled under Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your camera. Desktop applications such as Google Chrome or Zoom do not appear in that list, but they are controlled by the main Allow desktop apps to access your camera toggle.

If only one app cannot use the camera, close the app completely, then reopen it. Some applications only check camera permission when they start. Also check the app's own settings, because video conferencing tools may have a separate camera selection or permission screen.

Check the microphone separately

A working webcam does not guarantee a working microphone. In Windows Settings, go to System, then Sound, and check the input device. Speak and watch the test bar. If the bar does not move, the microphone may be muted with the F8 microphone shortcut, disabled in Sound settings, or blocked in the app's microphone permission. The EliteBook 830 G5 microphone is not part of the camera, so fixing the camera driver will not necessarily fix audio.

If the camera is still not detected

If the camera does not appear in Device Manager after enabling it in the BIOS and reinstalling drivers, the camera module or its internal connection may be faulty. This cannot be diagnosed reliably from Windows alone. If the laptop is under warranty or covered by an HP service agreement, contact HP support. Otherwise, a repair technician may need to reseat or replace the camera module.

Quick test order

  • 1. Open the camera shutter and press the F8 keyboard shortcut.
  • 2. Open the Windows Camera app to check for a black screen or an error message.
  • 3. Check Device Manager for the camera and its driver status.
  • 4. Enable or reinstall the driver, then restart.
  • 5. Check Windows camera privacy settings and the app's own permission.
  • 6. Test the microphone separately in Windows sound settings.

What you can do today

If you need a working camera immediately and the built-in webcam cannot be restored, use an external USB webcam. Windows will usually detect a standard USB camera without extra software. Select it in your video call app if the app does not switch automatically. This does not fix the built-in camera, but it lets you continue calls while you arrange service.
