How to View Microsoft Teams Meeting Chat After a Meeting

Find Microsoft Teams meeting chat after a meeting ends on desktop, mobile, and web. Practical steps for chat history, search, and common access problems.

Before you start

You need access to the same Teams account or guest identity that was used during the meeting. Meeting chat is stored in the meeting thread, not in a separate camera or microphone log. On a desktop, use the Teams app or a supported browser. On a phone, use the Teams mobile app. You do not need the camera or microphone to read the chat afterward.

Step-by-step instructions

Open Microsoft Teams and sign in with the account that attended the meeting. Go to Chat in the left navigation. Meetings can appear as a chat thread with the meeting title. If the meeting was started from a channel, the chat remains within that channel under the meeting post.

If the meeting thread is not visible in Chat, open Calendar. Find the original meeting item in the past calendar view, open it, and select the Chat tab. This path works for many invitations where the meeting chat is tied to the calendar event. In Teams on the web, the same steps apply, but calendar and chat layout can vary slightly by version.

For a channel meeting, open Teams and select the team. Choose the channel where the meeting was held. Find the meeting post in the Posts or conversation area, then select Show conversation or the linked chat to see the full thread. Channel meeting chat is usually available as long as the channel and conversation are not deleted.

On mobile, open Teams and tap Chat or Calendar. Use Calendar to locate the past meeting and open its chat tab, or search for the meeting title. The search box at the top can find meeting chat and messages by participant name or a memorable phrase.

Check the output

After opening the meeting, confirm that the message list contains the expected meeting chat rather than a separate one-on-one conversation. The meeting title or event details should be visible above the thread. Older messages may require scrolling up. Some organizations set retention policies that remove chat after a specified period, so older history may not be available even if the meeting is still listed.

Search results show message snippets and the meeting or channel where they are located. If you can find a result but cannot open the full conversation, the meeting chat may be restricted by an admin policy or the item may have been deleted.

Common problems and next steps

The meeting chat is missing from Chat. Use Calendar instead and open the original meeting item. If the chat is still missing, the person may have left the meeting before chat was enabled, may have been removed from the conversation, or an admin retention policy may have removed the history.

You can find the meeting in search but not the chat tab. Check whether it was a channel meeting and open the matching channel conversation. Some invitations create a temporary chat only for the call duration, so no persistent history remains.

You are signed in with a different account. Sign out and sign in with the account that originally received the invitation. Guest access can also change which meeting conversations are visible.

If the chat exists but messages are missing, contact the Teams administrator to ask about retention or compliance settings. Do not assume that camera permission, screen sharing, or recording settings affect chat history; chat storage follows messaging and meeting policies instead.
