How to Use YouTube Live Chat
A practical guide to YouTube Live Chat: where to find it, how to read and send messages, useful settings, and ways to handle common issues during a live stream.
Before you start
YouTube Live Chat is available on the watch page for active live streams and Premieres. On a computer, the chat panel usually appears to the right of the video player. On a phone or tablet, it may appear below the player or behind a chat button. You need to be signed in to a Google account to send messages. Viewing chat may be possible without signing in, but message posting requires sign-in.
Live chat works inside the standard YouTube website or app. You do not need to install a separate chat program. If a stream has chat disabled, is age-restricted, or is set as made for kids, the chat panel may be hidden or unavailable.
Step-by-step instructions
Open the live stream you want to watch. If the stream is currently live or scheduled as a Premiere, look for a chat icon or a panel labeled Live chat. On a computer, click inside the chat message field when the panel is visible. On a mobile device, open the chat view first if it is collapsed.
Type your message in the text box where it says something similar to "Say something" or "Send a message." Press Enter on a computer or the send button on a mobile device to post. Messages are shared publicly with other viewers, so keep personal information out of chat.
Use the controls near the chat panel to change how chat appears. You can often switch between Top chat and Live chat. Top chat shows messages selected for likely relevance or engagement, while Live chat shows messages as they arrive. Availability and labels can vary by platform and stream.
If you are the stream host, open YouTube Studio for the stream and find the live chat settings. Depending on your account and stream configuration, you may be able to turn chat on or off, review moderation settings, choose who can send messages, or add moderators. Keep confirmation changes reversible by returning to the same settings if you need to switch back.
Check the output
Send a short test message and confirm it appears in the visible chat feed. Messages normally appear newest first in a flowing list. If you are moderating, refresh or scroll the chat panel to see whether the message remains visible and whether moderation actions are responding.
Chat can be delayed by several seconds compared with the live video. This delay can be longer depending on the stream, network conditions, platform, and moderation settings. A chat message that does not appear instantly is not necessarily an error.
Common problems and next steps
If the chat panel is missing, the stream owner may have disabled chat, or the video may be marked as made for kids. Try another live stream with an active chat panel to compare. On a mobile device, expand the chat view rather than assuming the feature is unavailable.
If your message is rejected or removed, it may have been caught by platform filtering or removed by a moderator. Avoid rapid repeated posting, links, offensive language, and personal details. Repeatedly sending the same message can make the problem harder to diagnose.
For owners or moderators, review the stream's chat settings and moderation tools if messages are being blocked unexpectedly. Make one setting change at a time, then test with a normal viewer account. Keep a record of the original setting so you can return to it if the new behavior is not what you want.
