MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to Use Chat in Google Meet

Learn how to send, read, and manage chat messages during a Google Meet video call, including where to find the chat panel and how to avoid common issues.

Before you start

Google Meet chat is built into the meeting interface, so you do not need to install a separate chat app or switch to another service. The chat panel is available while you are in a meeting, and it works in the same place as the video and audio controls.

Check that you have joined the meeting with a Google account that has permission to participate. In some education or work setups, the meeting organizer may restrict who can send chat messages. If chat is disabled, the option may be missing or read-only.

Step-by-step instructions

Join the Google Meet call through the meeting link or the Google Meet app. The following steps use the desktop web interface, but the mobile app follows a similar flow with the meeting controls arranged for a smaller screen.

1) Move your pointer over the meeting window to display the control bar. 2. Select the chat icon, usually shown as a speech bubble, to open the chat panel. 3. Type your message in the text field at the bottom of the panel. 4. Press Enter or select the send button to post the message.

Messages are visible to everyone in the meeting unless the host has changed the setting. Treat the conversation as a shared space, especially when participants join from personal accounts or different organizations.

Check the output

After sending a message, confirm that it appears in the chat panel with your name attached. If other participants have notifications enabled, they may see a brief indicator, but you cannot verify another person's notification settings from your side.

The chat panel keeps the current session's messages while you are connected. For information about saving, copying, or retaining chat history, check the current Google Meet help documentation for your account type, because availability can depend on the meeting organizer's settings and the Google Workspace edition.

Common problems and next steps

If the chat icon is visible but nothing happens when you select it, make sure the meeting window is in focus and that a pop-up blocker is not affecting the panel. Switching the meeting to a single tab can also make the control more reliable.

When chat is not available, confirm with the meeting host that chat has not been turned off for participants. In some school or workplace accounts, the organizer controls whether participants can send messages, so an individual browser setting will not necessarily restore the option.

Chat speed and display do not depend on your camera or microphone. If you are looking for options such as camera permission or the selected camera, open the separate video settings in Meet; those settings do not affect the chat feature.

If text looks small, use your browser zoom controls rather than changing the camera or screen resolution. Meeting chat is presented as part of the Meet interface, so the adjustment affects the page layout and not the video feed separately.
