How to Unhide a Meeting Chat in Microsoft Teams
Step-by-step instructions for restoring a hidden meeting chat in Microsoft Teams on desktop and mobile, plus checks and fixes when the chat does not reappear.
Before you start
Unhiding a meeting chat is a local action in the Microsoft Teams app. You are changing what appears in your chat list, not recreating or deleting the conversation. The meeting chat remains available to participants while the original meeting exists, unless an organizer or administrator has removed it or changed your access.
Check that you are signed in with the same account that received the meeting invitation. If you joined as a guest or from another organization, the chat may be listed under that separate account view. Also make sure the Teams app is open to the Chat section, because hidden chats are restored from that area rather than from the calendar or meeting window.
Step-by-step instructions
The exact wording and position of controls can vary slightly between Teams versions and between desktop, web, and mobile apps. Use the following sequence for the desktop or web version first, then check the mobile notes if that is where you are working.
Restore a hidden chat on desktop or web
- Open Microsoft Teams and select Chat on the left side.
- Find the search box at the top of the chat list.
- Type a name from the meeting title, the meeting organizer, or a known participant.
- When matching hidden chats appear in the search results, point to the relevant meeting chat.
- Select the more options icon next to the chat name.
- Choose Unhide from the menu.
- Select the chat in the results to open it, or go back to the chat list and look for the restored conversation.
Restore a hidden chat on mobile
- Open the Teams mobile app and tap Chat at the bottom.
- Tap the search field above the chat list.
- Enter the meeting title or a known participant's name.
- Scroll through the results to find the meeting chat.
- Press and hold the meeting chat row if no separate more options control is visible.
- Tap Unhide when the menu appears.
- Open the conversation and confirm that the history and reply box are visible.
The process is reversible: you can hide the chat again from the same more options or press-and-hold menu. Hiding only removes the chat from your visible list and does not unsubscribe you from future messages.
Check the output
- Confirm that the meeting chat is again listed in Chat without using search.
- Open the chat and verify that you can see previous messages from the meeting.
- Send a test reply only if it is appropriate for the conversation.
- Check that new replies from other participants appear in the chat list in the same way as your other active chats.
A restored chat should behave like the original conversation. If only a blank window opens, the conversation may have no accessible history for your account, or you may be looking at a separate chat thread with a similar name.
Common problems and next steps
The meeting chat does not appear in search
Search for a slightly different term, such as the organizer's full name, the exact meeting subject, or another participant. If the chat is not found, make sure you are viewing the correct account or organization in Teams. Meeting chat availability can also be limited by meeting policy, so a missing chat may not be something you can restore from your app.
The chat opens but appears empty
This may mean that the meeting used a separate chat thread or that your account does not have access to the full history. Ask the organizer to confirm which chat is linked to the meeting. In some cases, restarting Teams or switching between desktop and web can refresh the conversation view, but that does not recover content that is unavailable to your account.
The meeting has ended or the chat is no longer active
An unhidden past meeting chat can still be opened from the chat list, but whether you can reply depends on the organizer's settings and your retained access. If you only need a record of what was discussed, the restored chat may be sufficient even when replying is disabled.
If the chat cannot be found under your account, the most reliable next step is to ask the meeting organizer to send you a direct link or invite you back to the relevant meeting chat. Do not rely on third-party instructions or external downloads to alter Teams chat visibility.
