How to Turn On Closed Captions on Disney Plus
Turn on closed captions on Disney Plus from the playback screen, pick the right CC track, check the result and fix captions that are missing or doubled.
Before you start
Closed captions on Disney Plus are delivered by the streaming service with each title. Nothing is generated on your device, so you need an active subscription, a working connection and the Disney Plus app or a supported web browser. Captions are chosen per title from the tracks the service provides, and availability can differ by title, language and region.
- Make sure the Disney Plus app on your device is up to date, because the playback controls can look different on older versions.
- Know which device you are watching on: a phone or tablet, a web browser, a smart TV, a streaming stick or a game console.
- Check whether your TV or streaming device has its own captions setting turned on, because it can work independently of Disney Plus.
Step-by-step instructions
Captions are switched on from the playback screen rather than from the main menu. The general steps are the same across platforms, though the button layout varies.
- 1. Open Disney Plus, choose your profile and start playing the movie or episode.
- 2. Bring up the playback controls: tap the screen on mobile, move the mouse in a browser, or press a direction or select button on your remote.
- 3. Select the audio and subtitles icon, which usually looks like a small rectangle or speech bubble near a corner of the screen.
- 4. In the subtitles list, choose the track marked CC, for example English [CC]. CC tracks typically include sound descriptions and speaker cues, while plain subtitle tracks usually show dialogue only.
- 5. Close the menu and resume playback.
To turn captions off again, open the same menu and select Off in the subtitles list. On some platforms Disney Plus remembers your last subtitle choice for the profile, so check the setting when you start a different title. Some versions of the app also let you change caption size, font and background in the app settings or in the subtitle menu itself; if you do not see these options, your device may handle caption appearance through its own accessibility settings instead.
Check the output
After selecting a CC track, play a scene with dialogue and background sound. Closed captions should show spoken lines along with descriptions such as music or sound effects. If you see dialogue only, you may have picked a regular subtitle track instead of the CC version.
Also confirm that the text is readable from where you sit and stays in step with the audio. Caption quality and timing depend on the track supplied with each title, so a minor mismatch on one title does not necessarily mean your settings are wrong.
Common problems and next steps
- No CC option for a title: not every title offers closed captions in every language. Look for a CC track in another language or use a standard subtitle track if one is available.
- Two sets of captions on screen: your TV or streaming device captions are on in addition to Disney Plus captions. Turn off one of them, usually the device-level setting.
- Captions keep turning on or off: the subtitle choice may be stored per profile or reset after an app update. Check the selection on the playback screen for the profile you are using.
- The subtitles icon is missing: update the app, restart it, or sign out and back in. If the icon still does not appear, try the same title on another device or in a browser to tell whether the issue is with the device or the account.
- Captions are out of sync or stop partway: pause and resume, or close the title and start it again. If the problem persists on one specific title across devices, report it to Disney Plus support.
