How to Turn Off Audio Description on Your TV
Turn off audio description on your TV, streaming app, or set-top box, tell it apart from captions, and confirm the narrator track is gone.
The short answer
Audio description is an extra spoken track that narrates on-screen action, settings, and text. It may also be labelled video description, descriptive audio, descriptive video service (DVS), or AD. Turn it off in the audio or accessibility settings of the device that is playing the programme: the TV, a streaming app, or a connected box or stick.
This control is separate from closed captions and subtitles, which display text and leave the soundtrack unchanged. Muting the TV also leaves the description track selected, so the narrator returns when volume is restored. Choose the standard programme audio, then leave the setting off.
What to do, and how you will know it worked
You need the remote for the source you are watching (the TV itself, an HDMI device, or a streaming app on the set), and a few seconds of a scene with clear visual action. Identify that source first: a setting on the TV does not change a track coming from a cable box, streaming stick, console, or in-app audio menu. Captions can stay on; they do not keep audio description enabled. No input-level or volume target confirms this setting, and none is required.
Turn it off on the television
- 1. Open the TV settings or all-settings menu.
- 2. Open Accessibility, Audio, or Sound, and look for Audio Description, Video Description, Descriptive Audio, or DVS.
- 3. Switch that option Off. If you see a list of audio tracks or languages, select the ordinary programme mix, such as the main language in stereo or home-theatre sound.
- 4. Exit the menu and play the same title for several seconds.
On many LG sets the same option sits under Accessibility. Menu names and depth vary by model and software version. If the label is hard to find, use the settings search for “description” or check Sound for a secondary-audio or AD toggle. A verified click-path for one specific LG model or software version is not available here.
Turn it off in an app or on a connected box
If the TV option is already off and a narrator continues, the app or HDMI device is sending a described mix.
- 1. During playback, open the streaming app’s audio, speech, or accessibility control.
- 2. Select the standard audio track and leave any option named Audio Description, AD, Descriptive, or DVS unselected.
- 3. On a cable, satellite, or other set-top box, open that box’s accessibility or audio-language menu and disable audio description or descriptive video there.
- 4. If the remote has an AD, description, or similar shortcut, press it once, then listen; some remotes toggle the track on their own.
Success check
Play a scene with visible action. The setting has worked when you hear dialogue, music, and effects, and the extra voice that describes the picture has stopped. Captions, if you use them, can remain on. Volume going up or down does not prove the track has changed.
This check shows that the audio currently selected on that source no longer includes description. It leaves other apps, HDMI inputs, and live channels untested. Repeat the listen on each source you actually use.
If the narrator is still there
- 1. Switch input or app and test again; each path has its own audio setting.
- 2. Close the app, or power-cycle the TV and the connected device, then play the title once more.
- 3. In broadcast or cable audio lists, choose the main language soundtrack rather than a secondary or SAP option that carries description.
- 4. Try another title on the same service. If every available track still narrates the picture, the provider may only be offering a described mix, and the TV cannot remove narration that is built into that mix.
