How to Test Your Webcam in Zoom
Check your camera picture before or during a Zoom meeting. Learn how to open Zoom video settings, choose the right camera, and fix common webcam problems.
Before you start
You can test your webcam directly inside Zoom, so you do not need to join a meeting first. Zoom plays a local preview from the selected camera. The test does not record or broadcast your video; it only shows what the camera is currently sending to Zoom. If Zoom cannot show a picture, the problem is usually the camera permission, another application using the camera, the selected camera, or the connection. Close other camera or video call apps before testing because many cameras can only be used by one program at a time.
Step-by-step instructions
Use the Zoom desktop app for the most complete video settings. The web version may have fewer controls, and the exact labels can vary between versions.
- 1. Open the Zoom desktop app and sign in if required.
- 2. Select your profile picture or initials in the top-right corner.
- 3. Choose Settings.
- 4. Open the Video tab on the left.
- 5. Look at the preview area. If the camera is working, your picture appears there.
- 6. If the picture is black or no camera is shown, select a different option from the Camera drop-down menu.
- 7. Keep the preview open while you adjust the camera position, lighting, or background.
- 1. In Preferences or Settings, open Video.
- 2. Check the Camera menu and choose the correct device.
- 3. Use the preview to confirm the picture is visible.
- 1. In the Zoom mobile app, start or join a meeting to see the camera preview.
- 2. If the video is off, tap Start Video in the meeting controls.
- 3. If the picture is dark or the wrong camera is active, tap the camera switch icon to change between front and rear cameras.
Check the output
A working webcam test shows a live image that matches your movement without a long delay. The preview in Zoom may use a lower resolution than the camera's maximum setting, but the image should still be sharp enough to confirm that your face is visible and in focus. Check that the frame is not too dark and that your face is not cut off. Resolution and frame rate depend on the camera, the computer, and the current lighting. If the picture is grainy or choppy, move to a brighter location or close other programs that are using the computer heavily.
Common problems and next steps
If the video preview is black, confirm that the camera is not blocked by a privacy cover and that the cable is connected. On a desktop or laptop, check the operating system camera permission for Zoom. If Zoom does not appear in the camera list, the camera may be in use by another application or may need a driver or firmware update from the computer or camera manufacturer.
If the image works but looks poor, start with lighting. Face a window or lamp rather than sitting with a bright light behind you. Move the camera or screen so your face is centered and the lens is roughly at eye level. If the picture is slow or freezes, close other video or conferencing apps, check your internet connection, and restart the camera or computer if the problem continues.
When a meeting is not the right place to experiment, open the same Video settings preview and adjust the camera position, lighting, and framing there before you join. After the preview looks correct, you can join the meeting and use the in-meeting video controls to switch between the connected cameras or turn video off while you make more changes.
