How to Share Your Screen on Facebook Live

Learn how to share your screen during a Facebook Live broadcast, what the setup requires, and how to check the result.

Before you start

Facebook Live screen sharing is handled through Live Producer, Facebook's desktop broadcasting tool. You work from a computer and share either the full desktop, a browser tab, or an application window. The process runs locally in your browser, so you need a Facebook account with permission to create live videos on the Page or profile you want to use. A webcam is optional unless you also want your camera in the broadcast.

Step-by-step instructions

Open a desktop browser and sign in to Facebook. Go to Live Producer, then choose the Page or profile where the live video should be published.

Start a new live video. In the stream setup area, open the screen share option. Depending on your browser and Facebook version, it may be labelled as sharing the display or stated as "Go live with your screen."

Select what to share. The browser will show a picker with options such as the entire screen, one browser tab, or a specific window. Choose the intended source and confirm the share request.

Wait for the preview to appear in Live Producer. Adjust the broadcast title, audience, and other settings you need before starting. Do not include content you do not have permission to show.

Begin the live video when you are ready, then perform the activity you want to display. To end the broadcast, stop the live video and close the screen share request from your browser if it is still active.

Check the output

Use the preview in Live Producer before going live to confirm that the correct screen, tab, or window is visible and is not showing unintended content. While broadcasting, check the live view on the same Page or profile from another device or browser session where possible. Keep in mind that shared screen quality depends on the source's resolution, your computer's performance, and your connection, and that some protected or hardware-accelerated windows may appear black.

Common problems and next steps

  • If the screen share prompt does not appear, allow browser permission for screen capture and reload Live Producer.
  • If the preview is blank or black, choose a different window or tab, close protected content, or try disabling hardware acceleration in the browser.
  • If viewers cannot see the shared screen, confirm that the live video has started and that the correct stream source is selected.
  • If the broadcast is lagging, reduce the number of open applications, close unused tabs, or use a wired connection when available.
  • If the option is missing, switch to a supported desktop browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox and keep the browser updated.
