How to Remove the Background in Pixlr

How Pixlr's background removal works on still images, how the automatic tool differs from manual selection, how to keep transparency, and what it can't do for webcam video.

The short answer

Pixlr is a browser-based image editor. Its background removal works on still images: you open a photo, run the automatic background-removal or cutout tool, clean up the edges if needed, and export in a format that keeps transparency, such as PNG. The main limit is that it edits saved images, not a live webcam feed. If your goal is to replace your background during a video call, Pixlr is not the right tool, and that task is covered further down.

No version-specific documentation was available for this guide. Tool names, menu locations and plan limits are described in general terms. Check them against the version of Pixlr you are using.

What background removal in Pixlr is

Pixlr offers more than one editor, typically a simpler quick-edit editor and a more advanced layer-based editor. It has also offered a dedicated background-removal tool. The automatic option uses AI-based subject detection: it estimates which pixels belong to the main subject and makes the rest transparent. The advanced editor also includes manual selection and masking tools for cases where the automatic result is not clean enough.

General workflow

  • 1. Open Pixlr and choose either the dedicated background-removal tool or one of the editors.
  • 2. Upload or open the image you want to edit.
  • 3. Run the automatic background removal or cutout option and wait for the subject to be isolated.
  • 4. Check the edges, especially hair, fingers, glasses and areas where the subject's colors are close to the background's.
  • 5. Use the refine, brush or mask controls to restore parts of the subject that were wrongly removed, or erase background that was left behind.
  • 6. Optionally, place a new background on a layer beneath the cutout, or leave it transparent.
  • 7. Export as PNG if you need transparency. JPEG does not support transparency and will fill the empty area with a solid color.

To confirm it worked, look at the exported file in an app that shows transparency, usually as a checkerboard pattern, or place it over a colored background. Any leftover halo or missing edges will be easy to see.

How the automatic tool differs from manual selection

Approach | How it works | Best suited to | Typical weaknesses
Automatic background removal | AI detects the main subject and removes everything else in one step | Portraits, product shots and images with a clear subject | Fine detail such as hair, transparent objects, and subjects that blend into the background
Manual selection and masking (lasso, magic wand, brush masks) | You define what to keep or remove yourself | Complex scenes, multiple subjects, or fixing an automatic result | Slower; precision depends on your effort and input device

In practice, many people start with the automatic option and switch to masking only for the areas it gets wrong.

Factors that affect the result

  • Contrast: subjects that clearly stand out from the background separate more cleanly.
  • Lighting: even lighting without strong shadows reduces edge errors.
  • Resolution: higher-resolution source images give the tool more detail to work with. Output resolution may depend on your plan, so check this.
  • Fine or translucent detail: hair, fur, glass and smoke are hard for most automatic tools and usually need manual cleanup.

If you meant replacing your webcam background on calls

Pixlr processes image files and does not provide a virtual camera, which is the software device that conferencing apps would need in order to receive an edited live feed. For live background blur or replacement, use the background effects built into your conferencing app, or a separate virtual-camera application that your conferencing app can select as its camera. You can still use Pixlr to prepare the still image you want to use as a custom virtual background, then upload that image in the conferencing app.

Background effects only change the video and have no effect on audio. Removing or blurring the visual background does not reduce room noise, echo or keyboard sounds picked up by a webcam microphone. Audio quality depends on the microphone you select, its distance from your mouth, the room, and any noise suppression in your conferencing app or operating system. Those are configured separately from video effects.
