MY WEBCAM TEST GUIDE

How to Play a Google Meet Recording

Where Google Meet saves recordings, how to play one from Google Drive or a link, how to download it, and what to check if a recording won't open or play.

The short answer

A Google Meet recording is saved as a video file in Google Drive, not inside the Meet app. To play it, open the file from Google Drive, from the link in the email Google sends after the recording is ready, or from the link attached to the Google Calendar event. The video opens in Drive's built-in player, and you press play there. You can also download the file and watch it in any media player that handles common video formats.

Recordings are normally stored in a folder called "Meet Recordings" in the Google Drive of the meeting organizer. If you organized the meeting, look in your own Drive. If someone else organized it, you need a shared link or access from them.

A different question sometimes uses the same words: playing a video for other people during a live Meet call. That means sharing your screen, not opening a saved recording. It is covered briefly at the end.

Playing a recording on a computer

  • 1. Sign in to the Google account that organized the meeting, or the account the recording was shared with.
  • 2. Open Google Drive and go to My Drive, then the "Meet Recordings" folder. If you were sent the recording, check "Shared with me" instead.
  • 3. Find the file. It is usually named after the meeting and its date and time.
  • 4. Double-click the file. Drive opens a preview player.
  • 5. Press play. You can pause, seek, change the volume and switch to full screen in the player.

How to tell it worked: the video plays, the progress bar moves, and you can hear the meeting audio at a normal volume setting. If the player shows a message saying the video is still processing, the file exists but is not ready to stream yet. Wait and try again later.

Playing a recording from an email or calendar link

When a recording finishes processing, Google typically emails a link to the meeting organizer and the person who started the recording. The link is also usually added to the Calendar event for that meeting. Selecting either link opens the same file in Drive's player. If you are not signed in to an account with access, you will see a request-access screen instead of the video.

Playing a recording on a phone or tablet

Open the Google Drive app, go to the "Meet Recordings" folder or the "Shared" section, and tap the file to play it. Opening a recording link on a mobile device usually hands it to the Drive app if the app is installed.

Downloading the recording to watch offline

In Google Drive, right-click the file, or open its three-dot menu, and choose Download. The recording downloads as a video file, normally MP4, which most desktop and mobile media players can open. Downloading is useful if your connection is slow, if you want to play the recording without being signed in, or if you want to edit it. Whether you can download depends on how the file was shared. The owner can turn off downloading for viewers.

If you can't find or play the recording

What you see | Likely reason | What to do
No "Meet Recordings" folder | The recording is in the organizer's Drive, not yours, or the meeting was never recorded | Ask the organizer to share the file or confirm a recording was made
Video says it is still processing | The file has not finished processing | Wait and reload; longer meetings tend to take longer
"You need access" message | Your signed-in account has no permission | Switch to the right account or request access from the owner
No Download option | The owner restricted downloading | Watch in Drive or ask the owner to change the setting
Video plays but there is no sound | Muted player, muted device or wrong audio output | Check the player volume, your system volume and the selected speakers or headphones

Not every Google account can record in Meet. Recording depends on the account type and on settings an administrator controls. If the record option was missing during the call, there may be no recording to play.

If the video plays silently, separate two cases. If silence starts at a certain point and the rest plays normally, the meeting audio itself may be missing for that stretch. If there is no sound anywhere, and other videos on the same device are also silent, the problem is your playback device or its output setting, not the recording.

Transcripts and captions

If a transcript was turned on during the meeting, it is usually saved as a separate Google Docs file, not inside the video. Look for it near the recording in Drive or linked from the Calendar event. Availability depends on the account type and the meeting's settings.

Playing a video for others during a live call

To show a video to participants during a Meet call, use the present or screen-share option. If you want others to hear the video's audio as well, share the specific browser tab where the video is playing and keep tab audio sharing turned on. Sharing a whole screen or a single window may send the picture without the sound, depending on your browser and operating system.

What this guide doesn't cover

No verified figures were available for how long processing takes, how long recordings are kept, or exactly which Google Workspace plans include recording and transcripts. These details depend on the account and its administrator's settings. For a work or school account, ask your administrator. For a personal account, check Google's current help pages for Meet.
