How to Make a Collage in Google Photos

Step-by-step instructions for making a collage from selected pictures in Google Photos, including layout choices, editing options and saving the result.

Identify the symptom and environment

The collage maker in Google Photos works on Android and iPhone through the Google Photos app. It is designed for combining a small group of pictures into one image, so it is best used when you already have two to nine selected photos available on the device or in your Google Photos library.

Isolate where the fault occurs

If the collage option is unavailable, first check that you are using the Google Photos app rather than a web browser. The desktop and mobile web versions may not show the same design tools. Also confirm that the selected photos are still present in the library and that the app has permission to access your photo library.

A photo that has not finished syncing or was removed from device storage may still appear in a preview but fail when the collage is rendered. If this happens, deselect that image and use another one to see whether the remaining selection works normally.

Try reversible fixes in order

Open the Google Photos app and tap the photo library view. On Android, tap and hold the first picture, then tap additional pictures to select them. On iPhone, tap Select and then choose the pictures. With the photos selected, tap the Create or Plus option and choose Collage.

Google Photos generates a default collage and then opens an editing screen. If multiple layout choices are available, swipe through or tap the layout options to choose a grid arrangement. Use the edit controls to adjust individual photos within the collage, apply a filter, or change the aspect ratio if the editing screen provides those options.

When the collage looks correct, tap Save or Done. The finished collage becomes a new photo in your library. The saved file is usually exported as a JPEG, which applies compression and may reduce fine detail compared with the original pictures.

Confirm the result

Open the saved collage from the main photo grid and check that every intended picture appears, nothing is unexpectedly cropped, and the text or key subjects are visible. If the output looks correct, no further repair is needed. If corners or faces are missing, reopen the original photos, select the same group again and choose a different layout.

If the problem remains

If the collage preview is blank, the app crashes, or the save action fails repeatedly, note which photos were selected and whether they open normally on their own. A picture that fails only inside the collage tool may have an unsupported file format, an unusual pixel dimension, or incomplete metadata.

Keep the original photo files and do not delete them while troubleshooting. If a specific image consistently causes the problem, convert a copy to a common format such as JPEG and try again. For continued app crashes or missing collage controls after updating Google Photos, contact Google support or the device manufacturer. A failed collage does not by itself prove that the camera or phone storage has failed.
