How to Fix iPad Microphone Crackling

Step-by-step troubleshooting for iPad microphone crackling, static, or distorted sound during calls, recordings, and video chats.

Identify the symptom and environment

Crackling from an iPad microphone usually sounds like short pops, static, or a rustling noise over the voice. Record when you hear it: during a video call, while using the Camera app, when recording a voice memo, or as soon as the microphone is active. Note whether the noise appears on the recording itself, in the other person's audio, or only through your speaker.

The exact iPad model and operating system version matter because microphone controls and settings can vary. Check the software version in Settings, and note which app is using the microphone when the crackling occurs. If the issue is present in one app but not another, the problem is more likely related to that app or its audio settings than to the microphone hardware.

Isolate where the fault occurs

A quick way to narrow down the cause is to test the microphone in different situations. Make a short recording in Voice Memos, then play it back. If the voice recording has crackling or background noise, the problem is being captured by the microphone. If the recording sounds clean but calls or streams still crackle, the cause may be the connection, app, or network audio path instead.

Try the same recording with a different input device, such as a compatible wired or wireless headset microphone, if you have one. A clean recording through the headset suggests the iPad's built-in microphone or its surrounding case may be involved. A crackling recording through both microphones points more toward the app, software settings, or audio processing.

Also consider physical obstructions. Remove the case, screen protector, film, or any attached accessory that could cover a microphone opening. Dust, lint, or packed debris in the microphone holes can cause exactly this type of muffled popping sound.

Try reversible fixes in order

Start with the least disruptive changes.

Close and reopen the affected app. This can reset a faulty audio session without changing any data.

Disconnect Bluetooth audio devices. If the iPad is trying to use an unstable Bluetooth microphone or output device, audio can break up in a way that sounds like crackling.

Check microphone permission for the app. Open Settings, select Privacy, then Microphone, and confirm the app is allowed. If permission was recently changed, turn it off and on again, then restart the app.

Restart the iPad. A restart clears temporary audio state while preserving your files and settings.

If the problem appears only during calls or streaming, check the connection. Move closer to a Wi-Fi access point or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data for a short test. Network problems do not affect the microphone itself, but they can make received or transmitted audio sound clipped and crackly.

Check the audio level in the app if it offers an input level control. A very high input level can make loud speech distort into crackling. Reduce the level, move the iPad slightly farther from your mouth, and test again.

Confirm the result

After each fix, repeat the same test that first showed the symptom. If Voice Memos was the original test, record and play back a short clip again. If the crackling occurred during a call, make a short test call or record a message in the same app and listen for the noise.

You have confirmed the fix when the same activity no longer produces crackling under the same conditions. If the noise is gone in one app but remains in another, keep the working state as a reference and repeat the app-specific steps for the remaining app.

If the problem remains

Write down which tests you performed and what each one showed. Useful details include the iPad model, operating system version, whether recordings crackle in Voice Memos, whether a headset microphone sounds clean, and which apps are affected.

Do not treat crackling alone as proof that the microphone has failed. Software, app settings, case debris, Bluetooth routing, and network conditions can all produce similar symptoms. If cleaning the microphone openings and completing the software tests do not help, contact Apple support or an authorized repair provider. The notes from your tests will help them avoid repeating basic steps and move toward a proper diagnosis.
