How to Convert AVIF to GIF
Step-by-step instructions for converting an AVIF image to GIF, checking the result, and fixing common conversion issues.
Before you start
Prepare the AVIF file and decide where you want the conversion to run. A local image editor or command-line tool works without uploading the file, while a web converter processes the image in a browser or on a remote server. Check the size and dimensions of the source if your chosen tool shows import limits. Make sure the AVIF file opens correctly before starting.
Step-by-step instructions
1) Open the image tool or editor that supports AVIF input and GIF output.
2) Load the AVIF file. In a desktop editor, use the Open or Import command. In a web tool, use the file picker to select the source file.
3) Choose GIF as the export or conversion format. If the tool offers a Save As or Export panel, select GIF from the format list.
4) Adjust the settings only if the tool shows them. Common options include palette size, dithering, looping for animated output, and frame delay. When the AVIF is a still image, leave animation settings at their defaults.
5) Start the conversion and save the resulting GIF under a new filename so the original AVIF remains unchanged.
Check the output
Open the converted GIF in an image viewer or browser and compare it with the source AVIF. Check colors, edges, transparency, and file size. GIF uses a limited color palette and may not preserve smooth gradients or partial transparency as well as AVIF. Confirm that the file extension is .gif and that the image displays without errors.
Common problems and next steps
If the output looks posterized or banded, enable dithering or choose a larger color palette. If transparency becomes jagged or filled with a solid color, check whether the tool supports GIF transparency and whether the source uses alpha transparency. When a web converter rejects the source, try a smaller or re-exported AVIF file. For the reverse workflow, use a tool or command that accepts GIF input and exports AVIF.
