How to Choose a Dynamic USB Microphone

A practical guide to choosing and using a dynamic USB microphone, covering connection setup, input selection, and key differences compared with other mic types.

The Essential Answer

A dynamic USB microphone is a good choice when you want a simple, direct-to-computer microphone that does not require a separate audio interface or mixer. The USB connection carries both power and audio, so you connect the microphone directly to a USB port on your computer. Dynamic capsules are generally less sensitive to room noise and more tolerant of loud sounds than common condenser capsules, which makes them suitable for spoken voice in untreated rooms. However, a USB microphone is a different category from a USB webcam: the webcam captures video, while the microphone captures audio. Selecting a USB microphone as your audio input is also separate from giving a browser or application permission to access the microphone.

Which Differences Matter for Your Use Case

Dynamic USB microphones are not all identical, but the most important comparison is not between two arbitrary models. It is between a dynamic USB microphone and the other common options you might be considering. The main tradeoff concerns connection and capsule type.

  • Dynamic USB microphone: connects by USB and needs no separate interface. Choose this for direct connection to a computer for calls, recording, streaming, or voiceover. Dynamic capsules usually reject more background sound and handle close, loud speech well.
  • Condenser USB microphone: also connects by USB, but the condenser capsule is typically more detailed and more sensitive. This can be useful in a quiet, acoustically treated room, but it may pick up more room echo and background noise.
  • Dynamic XLR microphone: uses an XLR connection and needs an audio interface, mixer, or recorder. Choose this when you already have XLR equipment or plan to expand a more advanced audio setup.
  • Built-in webcam microphone: captures audio from the webcam. It is convenient, but the microphone is usually farther from your mouth and less suitable for controlled voice audio than a dedicated USB microphone.

When a device is listed as a USB microphone, do not assume it is also a webcam. A USB microphone captures audio only. If your task requires video, you still need a separate webcam. The microphone should not be confused with the video capture device.

How to Connect and Select a Dynamic USB Microphone

Prerequisites

  • A dynamic USB microphone with its supplied USB cable
  • A computer with an available USB port
  • An application or operating system that can record or use microphone input

Connection Steps

  • Connect the USB cable to the microphone. On many dynamic USB microphones, the USB port is on the bottom or side of the body.
  • Connect the other end of the cable directly to a USB port on the computer. If possible, use a port on the computer itself rather than a low-power hub.
  • Wait for the operating system to detect the microphone. In most cases, the system shows the microphone as a USB audio device without requiring a separate driver.
  • Open the camera, recording, or communication application you want to use.
  • Give the application permission to use the microphone if the operating system or browser asks for it. Microphone access permission is separate from camera permission.
  • In the application settings, select the USB microphone as the active input device. Detection, permission, and active input selection are three separate steps.

Completion Check

Speak into the microphone and check that the audio input meter in the application moves. If the meter does not move, confirm that the correct microphone is selected in the application and that the application has been granted microphone permission. Also check the system sound settings to confirm that the USB microphone appears and is not muted.

If you want to record voice through a dynamic USB microphone, treat the USB connection as the audio path only. A USB microphone does not supply video, and connecting it does not activate a camera.
