How to Change and Add Backgrounds in Microsoft Teams

Step-by-step instructions for changing Microsoft Teams backgrounds, applying background effects before or during a meeting, and fixing common background problems.

Before you start

Background effects in Microsoft Teams are available in the desktop app during meetings. On mobile, the available options depend on the app version and device. Changing the background does not require a separate download or service for the standard blur and built-in image choices. Your device does need access to the selected camera; if the camera is blocked, Teams cannot display the preview or apply a background effect.

The processing for replacing or blurring the background happens locally on your device. A plain, evenly lit background helps Teams separate you from the surroundings more cleanly, but the feature can work without a green screen. Check that the Teams app is updated if you cannot find the background settings, because the location of these controls has changed between versions.

Step-by-step instructions

The most common way to change the background is before you join a meeting. The following steps apply to the Teams desktop app, with minor wording differences by version.

  • 1. Open Teams and join or start a meeting. When the pre-join screen appears, look for the background settings icon near the camera switch.
  • 2. Click the background settings icon. A panel opens with background options.
  • 3. Choose Blur to soften the room behind you, select one of the built-in images, or click Add new to upload a background.
  • 4. Click Join now to enter the meeting with the selected background applied.

You can also change the background during a call. In the meeting window, open the More actions menu and select Apply background effects. The same panel appears, and the change is applied while you remain in the meeting.

For a custom Microsoft Teams background, use an image from your computer. Teams accepts common image file formats. Large images with high pixel dimensions can take longer to load, so a typical photo is usually simpler to work with than an extremely large file. The image is added to your background choices for the current device, not automatically synced as a separate account setting.

If you want a solid black background, the easiest method is to use an existing solid-color image as a custom background. Teams does not include a guaranteed black option in every version, so adding your own image gives you a predictable result.

Check the output

After applying a background, look at the preview in the background panel before you join or save the change. Move your head and hands slightly while watching the preview. If the background effect flickers around your outline, the camera is having difficulty separating you from the scene.

Keep in mind that Teams may reduce the effective detail of the video stream during a call depending on network conditions. This means a background that looks sharp in the local preview can appear more compressed or less crisp during a meeting. The background is not designed to preserve transparency; it replaces the area around you and does not create an alpha channel in the meeting video.

Common problems and next steps

If the background settings icon is missing, confirm that the camera is enabled and selected in Teams. The background controls may not appear when the meeting is in audio-only mode or when another app is using the camera exclusively.

If the background looks uneven, try improving the lighting on your face and reducing strong light behind you. Camera resolution and frame rate are not separate background controls, but a weak video signal can make the effect look worse. The background feature may be unavailable on some older devices because the processing requires sufficient local performance.

If a custom background will not load, check the file format and try a smaller image with different encoding. If you still cannot apply the effect, close and reopen the Teams app, then try again. Setting the background is reversible: open the background effects panel again and choose None or blur to return to the normal camera view.

The background effect only changes what meeting participants see. Your actual environment remains visible to the camera and microphone, so the privacy of your location depends on the situation around you, not on the on-screen background. This is not a promise of privacy; it is an important fact to verify if you are in a sensitive area.
