How to Change Google Meet Backgrounds on a Phone
Step-by-step instructions for changing your Google Meet background on Android or iPhone, including supported effects, quality limits, and common fixes.
Before you start
Background effects in the Google Meet mobile app are processed on your device or through the meeting service depending on the phone model and Meet version. You do not need to upload a file or open a desktop browser, but you do need the current Google Meet app installed and signed in with the account you use for meetings.
Check that the app has permission to use the camera before joining. On Android or iPhone, you can confirm this in the system settings for Google Meet. If camera permission is blocked, the background options may appear unavailable because there is no active camera preview.
Available choices can vary by device and app version. Some phones may offer blur, previously uploaded backgrounds, and a limited set of built-in images. Others may also allow you to add an image. Feature availability can change with updates, so use the controls shown in your installed version rather than assuming every effect is present.
Step-by-step instructions
The most direct way is to change the background while you are already in a meeting on your phone.
During a meeting
- Open the Google Meet app and join or start a meeting.
- Tap the meeting screen once so the control buttons appear.
- Tap the effects icon. It usually looks like a sparkle or three small shapes and may sit near the camera or more-options controls.
- Wait for the effects panel to open and show a preview of your camera.
- Select a background option. To remove a background, choose the option showing no effect or the plain camera preview.
- Tap Done, Close, or the X to return to the meeting.
If you want to upload your own background, use the Add or plus option in the effects panel when it is available. Choose an image from your phone. Meet applies the image as a virtual background, and the effect stays active until you change or remove it in a later meeting.
Before joining a meeting
You can also prepare the background from the pre-join screen. When the meeting preview appears before you join, look for the effects or background button on the preview. Tap it, select the background you want, and confirm the change. Then join the meeting as usual.
Changes made before joining normally carry into the meeting. The setting is reversible: open the same effects panel again and choose another background or the no-effect option.
Check the output
Use the small self-view in the effects panel or meeting screen to confirm that the background appears around your body. If the preview shows blur or the selected image behind you, the change is active.
The quality of a virtual background depends on the phone camera and the effect type. Busy backgrounds, low light, or a camera positioned far from your face can make edges look uneven. A custom image may also look different depending on its pixel dimensions and aspect ratio. Meet can resize or crop an uploaded image to fit the phone's portrait preview.
Background processing can increase battery use and may affect video smoothness or apparent frame rate on some devices. If the call feels choppy, removing the effect can help more than changing the image format or resolution.
Common problems and next steps
The background option is missing
Check for an app update first. If the app is current and the option is still missing, the phone or meeting configuration may not support phone background changes in that version. Work or school accounts can also restrict some Meet features.
The preview is black or the camera does not show
Close the effects panel and confirm that the selected camera is working in the meeting preview. If the rear camera is selected, switch to the front camera from the meeting controls. Then reopen the effects panel. If the camera is still unavailable, review camera permission for the Meet app in your phone settings.
Your own image cannot be added
Not every Android phone or Meet version shows an upload option. Update the app and close other camera apps that may be using the camera. If the upload control still does not appear, use a built-in background or blur for that meeting.
Keep the subject well lit and avoid busy clothing or a cluttered real background when using blur or replacement effects. This usually improves edge detection more reliably than choosing a different file format or compression setting.
