Google Voice Calling Random Numbers: How to Investigate
Find out why Google Voice shows calls to numbers you don't recognize. Check call history, linked devices, account access and spoofing, step by step.
If your Google Voice history shows outgoing calls to numbers you don't recognize, or people say your Google Voice number called them, there are several possible causes. These include an accidental dial from a connected device, a voice assistant mishearing a command, someone else using your Google Account, or caller ID spoofing that never touched your account. This guide helps you work out which one applies and what you can safely change.
Before you start
Google Voice is an online service tied to your Google Account. Calls are not placed by a program running only on your phone or computer, so the investigation starts with your account and every device signed in to it. You will need:
- Access to the Google Account that owns the Google Voice number, including its password and any second sign-in step
- The phone, computer or tablet where you normally use Google Voice
- A rough date and time for the suspicious calls, if you have one
- For work or school numbers: contact details for the administrator who manages your Google Workspace account
Exact screen names and menu layouts differ between the Android app, the iPhone app and the web version, and Google changes them over time. If a setting described below looks different on your device, look for the closest matching option rather than assuming it is missing.
Step-by-step instructions
1. Confirm the calls actually appear in your history
Open Google Voice and go to the calls list. Check whether the unfamiliar numbers appear there as outgoing calls. Note the date, time and duration of each one. If someone told you your number called them but nothing appears in your history, go to the spoofing section under Common problems. Your account may not be involved at all.
2. Look for accidental dials from your own devices
Compare the call times with your routine. Calls that happened while you were driving, exercising or asleep often come from a connected device rather than a person. Common sources include:
- A car's Bluetooth system redialing or calling from a synced contact list
- A smartwatch or headset with a call button or voice trigger
- A voice assistant on a phone or smart speaker that misheard a phrase as a call command
- A phone in a pocket or bag dialing from the recent calls screen
If the called numbers are slight variations of numbers in your contacts, a misdial is more likely than misuse.
3. Review how your phone routes calls through Google Voice
In the Google Voice app settings, find the option that controls which outgoing calls use your Google Voice number. If it is set to route all calls through Google Voice, calls placed from the phone's regular dialer may also show up in Voice history. Note the current setting before changing it, so you can switch it back.
4. Check the devices and numbers linked to Google Voice
In Google Voice settings, review the linked phone numbers and any devices or call-forwarding destinations. Remove any number or device you don't recognize. A linked number you never added suggests someone else has had access to your account.
5. Check your Google Account for unauthorized access
In your Google Account security settings, review the list of signed-in devices and recent security activity. If you see an unknown device or sign-in, sign it out, change your password, and turn on 2-Step Verification if it is not already enabled. Also check the account's recovery phone number and recovery email address.
6. Escalate managed accounts to the administrator
If your Google Voice number belongs to a work or school organization, tell the administrator what you found, including the numbers and times. Administrators may have access to reports that individual users cannot see. Do not assume this; ask them to confirm what they can review.
Check the output
After making changes, check the call history again over the next few days. The investigation has worked if:
- No new outgoing calls appear that you didn't make
- The linked numbers and devices list contains only items you recognize
- The Google Account device list shows only your own devices
- Any new security alert about your account matches something you actually did
Call history shows that a call was placed from your Google Voice number. It may not show which physical device placed it. If you need to know exactly where a call came from, change one thing at a time, such as unpairing the car or turning off the voice assistant, and watch whether the calls stop.
Common problems and next steps
People say you called them, but your history is empty
This usually points to caller ID spoofing. A scammer displays your number on outgoing calls from their own system. Changing your settings or password cannot stop this, because your account was never used. You can tell people who call back that you did not contact them. If the number becomes unusable, consider getting a new Google Voice number.
You shared a verification code with someone
A common scam asks you to read back a Google Voice verification code. The scammer uses it to link your phone number to a Google Voice account they control, then makes calls from it. If this happened, follow Google's official Google Voice help on reclaiming a phone number linked to another account. Secure your own Google Account as described above.
Calls continue after all checks
If unknown calls keep appearing after you have secured your account, removed unknown links and disconnected accessories, sign out of Google Voice on every device. Then sign back in only on the device you use most, and add others one at a time. If calls still appear, contact Google Voice support through the help options in the app or your Google Account. Have the dates, times and numbers ready.
Unexpected charges
If any of the calls went to international or premium numbers, check your Google Voice billing or credit balance and report unauthorized charges to Google. Removing stored payment methods that you don't need lowers the risk while you investigate.
