How to Blur Your Background in Google Meet

Step-by-step instructions for turning on background blur in Google Meet before or during a call, plus fixes for common camera and performance issues.

Before you start

Background blur in Google Meet softens the area behind you while keeping your face in focus. The effect normally runs on your device through the browser or app, so you need a computer or mobile device that supports it and an active camera feed. Close other apps that use the camera if Meet cannot access it.

Check that your browser or Meet app has camera permission. If you previously blocked access, the video preview may stay dark until permission is allowed again. A built-in or external webcam should be selected and working before you open the effect controls.

Step-by-step instructions

You can apply blur before joining a meeting or while already in one. The effect does not change your microphone or screen sharing settings.

Before joining, open the meeting link and look at the preview screen. Select the effects icon, sometimes shown as a sparkle or person icon in the lower area of the video preview, then choose the blur option. When blur is selected, the preview background becomes soft and the tile indicates that the effect is active.

During a meeting, open the meeting menu and choose the effects or visual settings option. Select the blur effect from the available backgrounds. The change applies to your outgoing video only; other participants continue to see their normal view until they change their own settings.

To remove the effect, open the same effects panel and choose the option that shows no background or clear effect. This is reversible at any time without leaving the call.

Interface labels can differ slightly between the web version and mobile apps or between meeting layouts. Keep the app or browser updated if the effect is missing.

Check the output

Confirm the preview shows a blurred background and a clear subject. If your face is partly hidden or your edges look uneven, adjust the selected camera position or lighting before the call.

Sign in to a test meeting or ask a participant to confirm what they see. The outgoing image may be limited by the camera resolution and frame rate offered by the browser or app; blur does not increase the source camera's resolution.

Common problems and next steps

If the blur option is unavailable, the device may not meet the effect's processing requirements. Updating the browser or app and ensuring the selected camera is allowed can restore the option on supported hardware.

When the video is black, check camera permission in the browser or operating system and confirm that no other application is using the selected camera.

Poor background separation is often caused by low light, a busy background, or a camera that is angled too far from the subject. Add lighting on your face, use a plainer background, and keep your body within the frame.

  • For a weak effect: improve frontal lighting and reduce clutter behind you.
  • For poor quality: clean the camera lens and avoid using a very dark or backlit scene.
  • For missing controls: update Meet and verify that you are using a supported browser or app.
  • For a black preview: check camera permission and close programs that may hold the camera.
