Free Streamlabs Scene Templates
How to find, install and adapt free Streamlabs scene templates, what a theme contains, what you still set up yourself, and licensing and safety checks.
Can you get Streamlabs scenes for free?
Yes. Streamlabs Desktop, the app formerly called Streamlabs OBS, has a built-in theme library. Many of its scene templates, often called themes or overlays, can be installed at no cost. A theme usually arrives as a ready-made set of scenes, such as starting soon, live, be right back and ending, with graphics, text and alert widgets already placed. Some themes in the same library require the paid Streamlabs Ultra subscription, so check the label on each one before you install it. Independent designers also publish free templates as files you import yourself.
How Streamlabs scene templates work
A scene is one layout of sources. A scene collection is the full set of scenes the app switches between. A template fills a scene collection with image, video and text sources, plus widgets such as alerts, a chat box or goal bars. Widgets get their data from your Streamlabs account, so they depend on the service and are not plain image files.
A template does not include your hardware. The template's author used different devices, so you need to add or re-link your own webcam, microphone, game or display capture source on your computer. Output settings are also separate from the theme. Encoding, bitrate, frame rate, resolution and recording format are set in the app's settings, and installing a template does not change them.
Menu names, the library layout and which themes are free change between app versions and over time. Confirm any step-by-step path, including the steps below, in the version you have installed.
Using a free template in practice
Installing from the built-in library
- Open the theme library in Streamlabs Desktop and look for themes marked as free.
- Preview the scenes and check that the layout fits your setup, for example a webcam frame of the right shape and position.
- Install the theme. It is usually added as a new scene collection that sits alongside your existing scenes, but check this in your version before you rely on it.
- Open each scene and replace the placeholder sources with your own webcam, microphone, game or screen capture.
- Edit the text elements, such as your channel name and social handles.
- Test the alerts and widgets before you go live.
Importing a template file from a designer
Some creators share a theme as an overlay file that Streamlabs Desktop can import as a complete scene collection. Others provide a pack of images and videos that you add as sources one by one. Read the creator's instructions, because the format determines whether you import a whole collection or build the scenes yourself. If you are moving from OBS Studio, Streamlabs Desktop can import OBS scene collections. Check the result afterwards, because plugins and some source types may not carry over.
Choosing between templates
- Static image overlays are the lightest option and suit less powerful computers.
- Animated backgrounds and video transitions add rendering work. If your stream drops frames or the frame rate falls, try a static version.
- A minimal template with a single webcam frame is easier to adapt than a full package of many scenes.
- Make sure the webcam frame's aspect ratio matches your camera. Otherwise the image will be cropped or stretched.
Limits and related questions
Licensing: a free download does not always mean free for any use. Read the terms. Some creators require credit, forbid redistribution or restrict commercial use.
File safety and privacy: a template contains media files and settings. Download only from sources you trust, and do not run executable installers that are presented as overlays. Widgets linked to your account can show donor names, follower names and chat messages on stream, so check which widgets a template turns on and what they display. Streamlabs' own policies govern how it handles account data. Read them rather than relying on assumptions.
Missing fonts: text in a template may use a font that is not installed on your system. The app then substitutes another font and the design shifts. Creators sometimes include the font or tell you its name so you can install it.
Do free templates lower stream quality? Not directly, because your encoder and bitrate settings determine quality. Heavy animated sources do use processor and graphics resources, though. If encoding runs on the same hardware, watch the app's performance indicators while you test.
Can you use a Streamlabs template in OBS Studio? Theme files made for Streamlabs Desktop are not guaranteed to open there. You can usually add the image and video assets manually. Streamlabs widgets would need to be added as browser sources, if the service provides a widget address for them.
