How to flip or unmirror a Discord webcam
Is your Discord camera mirrored only on your screen, or for everyone? Learn how to tell, how to flip the feed at the source or with OBS, and how to check the result.
The short answer
If only your own preview in Discord looks mirrored, so text appears backward to you, you may not need to fix anything. Many video-call apps show your self-view as a mirror image because that feels natural, while other people still see the unmirrored image. If other people also see you flipped, mirrored or upside down, change the image before it reaches Discord. You can do this in your camera's own software or by routing the camera through a virtual camera, such as the one in OBS Studio, and flipping it there. Discord's built-in flip or mirror controls are limited and differ by version and platform, so treat a Discord setting as something to look for, not something to count on.
First, work out which kind of flip you mean
"Flip camera" can mean three different problems, and each has a different fix:
- Your self-view is mirrored, but others see you correctly. This is usually expected behavior and needs no fix.
- Others see you mirrored or upside down. The camera feed itself is flipped, often by the camera driver, a camera app or a virtual camera, and needs correcting at the source.
- You're on a phone and want to switch between the front and rear cameras. This is a camera switch, not a mirror setting.
Check what other people actually see
Your own preview can't tell you how your video looks to others, so run this check before and after any change.
- 1. Hold up something with readable text, such as a printed page or a book cover, in front of the camera.
- 2. Start a video call with a friend, or join from a second account on another device, such as a phone, and watch your own feed from there.
- 3. Ask whether the text reads normally from left to right and whether the image is upright.
- 4. Success check: if the text reads correctly on the other side, your outgoing video is not mirrored, even if it looks backward in your own preview.
This test confirms orientation only. It doesn't tell you anything about lighting, focus, frame rate or connection quality, which depend on your camera, room and network.
Look in Discord's video settings
On the desktop app, open User Settings, go to Voice & Video, choose your camera from the camera list and use the video test preview. Look for any option related to mirroring or flipping. This guide could not confirm that a current Discord version includes such a toggle, and menu names change between updates. If you find one, run the other-viewer check above, because a mirror option may change only your own preview and not what others receive.
Fix the image in your camera's software
Some webcam manufacturers provide companion apps with flip, mirror or rotation settings, and these can be applied at the driver level so every app, Discord included, gets the corrected image. Check whether your camera has such an app and whether it offers these options. Because support varies by model and operating system, this guide can't say which cameras include them. After changing a setting, restart Discord or reselect the camera in Voice & Video, then repeat the other-viewer check.
Flip the feed with OBS Virtual Camera
If neither Discord nor your camera software can flip the image, OBS Studio can. OBS is a free recording and streaming app. Its virtual camera feature presents the OBS output to other apps as if it were a webcam, so you can flip your real camera in OBS and send the corrected picture to Discord.
- 1. Turn off your video in Discord. On many systems, only one app can use a physical camera at a time.
- 2. In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source and select your webcam.
- 3. Right-click the source, open Transform and choose Flip Horizontal to undo a mirror image. Use Flip Vertical or Rotate 180 degrees if the image is upside down.
- 4. Make sure the preview in OBS looks the way you want others to see you, with any text reading normally.
- 5. Click Start Virtual Camera in OBS.
- 6. In Discord, open User Settings, go to Voice & Video and select the OBS virtual camera as your camera.
- 7. Success check: the Discord video preview shows the OBS image, and another viewer confirms that text reads correctly.
OBS must keep running with the virtual camera started for Discord to receive video from it. If the virtual camera doesn't appear in Discord's camera list, start it in OBS first and then restart Discord.
If your virtual camera looks flipped in Discord
A virtual camera that looks reversed in Discord is often a self-view effect, not a real problem. If OBS shows the image correctly but Discord's preview shows it mirrored, check with another viewer before changing anything. Flipping the source again to make your own preview look right can leave everyone else seeing you mirrored. Only change the transform in OBS if the other viewer confirms the image is wrong.
Quick reference
| What you notice | Likely cause | What to do |
| Text looks backward only in your own preview | Self-view is shown as a mirror | Confirm with another viewer; usually no fix needed |
| Others see you mirrored | Camera feed is flipped at the source | Flip it in camera software or in OBS with Flip Horizontal |
| Others see you upside down | Camera mounted or reported upside down | Flip Vertical or Rotate 180 degrees in OBS, or remount the camera |
| Virtual camera looks reversed only to you | Self-view mirroring of the virtual camera | Confirm with another viewer before flipping in OBS |
| Wrong camera on a phone | Front or rear camera selected | Use the camera-switch control in the call |
On a phone
In the Discord mobile app, "flip camera" usually means switching between the front and rear cameras. Look for the camera-switch control among the call controls while your video is on. If the front camera's self-view looks mirrored, use the same other-viewer check to see whether others are affected.
If the camera doesn't show up at all
Flipping only matters once Discord can capture video. Camera access, a working video picture and good call quality are separate things. Discord needs permission to use the camera: in your operating system's privacy settings for the desktop app, or in the browser's site permissions if you use Discord in a browser. Once access is granted, the test preview should show live video. If the preview stays black, check whether another app, OBS included, is already using the camera.
What this guide couldn't confirm
No verified source was available for whether current Discord versions include a mirror or flip toggle, for the exact menu labels on each platform, or for which webcam models offer flip settings in their own software. The steps above rely on general behavior that you can check yourself, and the other-viewer test is the reliable way to confirm the result on your own setup.
